10 Things You’ll Understand If You Are A Double Major

Anyone who is a double major knows there are definitely pros and cons. Some days you probably think back to that time when you were sitting in the advisor’s office and declaring two majors and wonder why in the world you decided to do that. Here is 10 things that all double majors can relate to.

1. Planning your schedule is not an easy task.

When scheduling time comes around you probably spend hours trying to figure out the perfect balance. Having a double major means having 2x the requirements so trying to figure out the perfect plan to make all of your classes fit well together and allow you to graduate in a timely manner is quite the task.

2. The answer to everyone’s “What’s your major?” question is never a short one.

When people ask you what your major is they aren’t quite ready for the answer they will get. One word, like business, simply won’t cover what you’ve decided to dedicate your time to in college.

3. Having to explain why you want to have two majors is a regular occurrence.

Shortly after you say that you are double majoring comes the question about how your majors relate and what you plan to do with them. You probably have an answer memorized at this point even if you’re really not sure what you want to do.

4. Having to be advised by two different advisors.

One of the biggest struggles as a double major is having to have two different advisors. Two degree audits leaves lots of room for confusion when you go home to try and merge what your two advisors have told you.

5. Classes that count for both degrees are a blessing.

Finding a class that overlaps on both of your requirements is a real gift. This means that its one less credit you have to take and that makes you one step closer to graduation!

6. Your classes are never in one concentrated place.

If you’re double majoring then you’re probably running from building to building on campus too. Different majors bring different buildings, so although it might be nice to have all of your classes in one place that just would be as much fun, right?

7. Going from one class to the next can be like going to another world.

Depending on what majors you have chosen and how they relate, a change of classes can be a complete change of thought. Sometimes you may feel like you are living a double life.

8. There is no room for “fun classes”.

Having double the requirements doesn’t leave a lot of room for electives. So, while your friends are taking a dance class just for fun, just remember that it’s all worth it to get that double degree!

9. Some weeks seem like you’re drowning in work.

Every college student has those weeks where it seems like every teacher decided to make all of the semesters work due. As a double major, you may always feel like that though. Every class you take is absolutely necessary and professors are definitely going to treat them as so.

10. You can’t pick which major is your favorite.

Asking what major is your favorite would be like asking a parent which of their children is their favorite. After all, if you only liked one you would have stuck to being a solo major.

Double majoring can be overwhelming at times but it’s definitely worth it. If you’re a double major and wondering if everyone feels this way, don’t worry you are not alone!
