There are some things that only a person from New York has to deal with in a day, or has to do to get through it. You won’t find these habits any where else, because, maybe, life circumstances just don’t call for it. Here, in New York you need to do certain things to get by. Here are a few characteristics and life-habits of someone who is definitely a New Yorker.
You carry your cell phone charger everywhere you go. I don’t know if there’s high battery drainage issues specifically in this part of the U.S. or if we’re all just suffering from the fear of being cut-off. But You can definitely tell someone is from New York if they carry a usb cord around with them everywhere! In a bag, in their hand, or stuffed in their back pocket, they’ve got it somewhere on them. Plus, there’s plenty of places to connect and plug in all over the city, so it’s pretty convenient to have it with you.
You never look at the maps in the subway. Some New Yorkers are so consistent, they know their way around and they know their routes. There’s no need to check the map, we’re getting on the Downtown A. And if we’re unsure, we know we can just look up at the overhead signs, rather than stare at a huge MTA map for a long time. Better yet, get the app on your phone that never dies because you’ve got your USB with ya. 😝
You laugh at your own jokes. Yes! It is a habit of New Yorkers. The self-confidence levels can be really high for some people here. We like to entertain people and you may find us funny, but no worries if you don’t. We’ll just laugh at ourselves because we always get the joke. You need this kind of self-happiness mentality sometimes!
You have gear and supplies for all seasons in storage or in your house somewhere. New Yorkers go through all kinds of weather. If you don’t have snow boots, rain boots, shovels, buckets, flash lights, rakes, ice melt, beach umbrellas, and whatever else you can think of then you’re not from New York.
You get to choose your favorite stores. There are literally so many delis, groceries, restaurants, shopping malls, and such that you have options and can choose which you actually prefer. I’m not going to Chino’s on second, they’re sandwiches aren’t as packed as Bobbie’s on 5th! 🤔🌯😋
You carry as little stuff on your person as you can. Especially if you’re a commuter, you don’t want to have to lug a bunch of things. If you’re a New Yorker, you carry what you can fit in your pocket or in one bag and that’s it. Of course unless it’s completely necessary that you bring something with you where you’re going.
You know more than one way to get to where you’re going. An alternate train route, bus route, bike route, or driving route. If you’re a New Yorker you probably have at least 4 different ways you can get to work or school and most importantly, you know how to beat traffic using different routes or by leaving at certain times.
Every day after school or work is like a Friday. As soon as you punch the clock or submit that last assignment, you’re meeting up with friends or a date to do something cool or relaxing. There’s so much to do in NY and because New Yorkers are busy every day we’ve gotta wind down, or get lit, at the end of each.
