Women In Comics That Totally Kick Ass

We all know that Wonder Woman and Black Widow can totally bring the heat but there are so many other powerful women in comics that are worth the recognition! So here they are, friend, foe, or otherwise: women in comics that can kick some serious ass.

1. Wasp (Janet Van Dyne)
A founding Avenger and a fun-loving socialite, Wasp has an array of abilities that can really sting! Thanks to Hank Pym’s Pym Particles, Wasp can shrink to microscopic sizes or even grow by hundreds of feet. Translucent wings allow her to evade and attack while she is in her small, wasp-sizes state. She also possesses electric blasts which can pierce through skin and armor, weakening her enemies. Wasp is a great example of a woman who floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.

2. Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley)
Who needs a man when you have Mother Nature on your side? Once a botanical biochemist, Poison Ivy gained her abilities through experiments gone awry. Considering herself to be a defender of the environment, she has complete control over plants and can manipulate man through the use of pheromones. Poison Ivy also secretes lethal toxins, making her kiss a literal kiss of death. So many plants to save and so little time!

3. Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance)
Unable to join the police force like her father, Black Canary refused to let anything stand in her way of protecting the innocent. A street-smart vigilante, she packs a mean wail (supersonic, to be exact) that can crumble structures and completely incapacitate evildoers. She also knows her way around some martial arts and other styles of hand-to-hand combat, making her exceptionally fierce. One of the earliest heroines in the DC Comics Universe, she has been seen teaming up with the Justice League of America. She also works with her own team, the Birds of Prey, to help defend her place of origin, Gotham City. Talk about solidarity! She is definitely one of the most bad-ass women in comics!

4. Domino (Neena Thurman)
Her beginning may be tragic, but Domino is the perfect example of how a woman can rise above and take control of her life. During her childhood, Domino was used as part of an illicit government experiment in an attempt to create a mutant weapon. Having developed the ability to manipulate probability, she managed to escape her prison and became one of the deadliest mercenaries that the Marvel Comics Universe has ever seen. Of course, being able to ensure your own luck can prove to be pretty useful in that line of work.

5. Raven (Rachel Roth)
Being the daughter of an interdimensional demon isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Half-human and half-demon, Raven has to focus on controlling her emotions to suppress her inherited demonic powers such as magic, telekinesis, and the ability to manipulate energy. Although her powers are more of a curse that could lead to the destruction of Earth, she has one in particular that makes her quite the empath. Raven has the the ability to genuinely feel other people’s emotions such as joy, sorrow, and everything in between. Luckily for the rest of the world, she finds solace in being a member of Teen Titans, which helps her stay in check.

6. Storm (Ororo Munroe)
A descendent of an ancient line of African Priestesses, Storm is a bona fide female force to be reckoned with. As her lineage carries the potential to wield magic, she developed the psionic powers of controlling the weather. Her ability to safely manage her powers relies solely on controlling her emotions as they ultimately govern how she impacts the weather, so it would be wise to stay on her good side. Storm is most often recognized from her time working with the well-known comic team, the X-Men.

7. Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)
After contracting uranium poisoning from her father’s genetic research, Jessica Drew was injected with a spider-derived serum and placed in hibernation mode inside a genetic accelerator until she was cured. Having aged to a teenager by the time of her release, she came to find that she had developed superhuman powers thanks to the radiation exposure and serum. As Spider-Woman, her altered physiology allows her superhuman strength, endurance, and speed. She can endure forces that would normally kill a human and can produce bioelectric venom blasts. She also has the ability to scale any surface and can control her potent pheromones which greatly impacts her interaction with others. Spider-Woman has held many occupations, including bounty hunter, double agent for S.H.E.I.L.D. and Hydra, and Avenger.

8. Catwoman (Selina Kyle)
The ultimate cat burglar, Catwoman steals from the rich and corrupt. Sporting a sleek bodysuit and cat mask, she is a master of both hand-to-hand combat and acrobatics, allowing her to take care of herself in sticky situations. Although she has a great personality and can present herself very much as a lady, she has a very twisted moral compass which is what gets her into trouble. She rocked back and forth on the fence between good and evil while managing to steal the heart of the one and only Batman and the two have even gotten hitched in recent storylines. We all know Catwoman is one of the coolest women in comics!
