Here’s Why You Should Never Compare Yourself To Insta-Famous People

We’ve talked about why social comparisons are detrimental to self-image in other articles. But it’s also important to discuss why you should never compare yourself to “insta-celebs.” We compare ourselves to others when we are feeling especially insecure. The only logical thing to do in that headspace is to be a masochist and stalk a bunch of models, right? No. There are SO many reasons why social media is a fake representation of life and it is fabricated by whoever is posting.

Back when magazines were popular you got all your information from People, and you saw celebrity gossip through their lens. Now, we seem to be in control of our being own paparazzi and making our own tabloids. We put forth the information and images that we want people to see and hide what we don’t. We are bombarded by social media because of technology, and it is difficult to escape.  This can perpetuate a lot of anxiety and unhealthy thinking. To combat that, here are the most important reasons behind why you should never compare yourself to insta-famous people.

1. SO MUCH is photoshopped

What we’re seeing is not real. I used to get insecure when looking at pictures of girls whose waist looks to be the width of their head. Their skin is flawless, their makeup is on point and their hair flows down to their butts. Aside from the fact that they’re probably wearing hair extensions, have makeup artists and fashion guidance, the images are rarely real. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have been called out for photoshopping, and there are countless other B-list celebs who are utilizing photoshop. You are beautiful for what you look like naturally, but also who you are as a person. Sure, you can pay for all the plastic surgery you want but will you recognize yourself at the end of the day? If people cannot see you for you, screw ‘em.

2. Their job is to be attractive.

They pay for hair extensions and fake tans. I personally don’t care to spend my money that way. I would rather pay for experiences and traveling than looking good for other people. Let’s keep in mind that this is their job. Their job is looking good. They work out constantly, they get sent the newest makeup and hair products, and they spend hours perfecting their looks. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time for that ish. If I had all the time in the world I’d look great, but who wants to date someone who takes three hours getting ready for dinner. I don’t want to constantly chase validation from strangers at the cost of my own happiness. Call me crazy, but I think it’s obvious why you should never compare yourself to someone who is getting paid for things you have to pay to get yourself.

3. They’re collecting money from endorsements.

When they’re photoshopped and envied by thousands of people, companies want them to push their products onto you. Does sugar bear hair work? Who knows, but they’re here to convince you it does. I for one am not going to pay a certain amount every month for “better hair.” If it does work, great, I’m glad Amanda Stanton gets her subscription for free (even though we also know she has hair extensions so …..fake news?). They’d sell their soul for a donut.

4. The persona you perceive is not indicative of their reality.

If you’re still wondering why you should never compare yourself to these people, consider this: THEY don’t even compare to their public persona. They’re only posting their “highlight reel.” Everyone has their high points and low points. But being universally loved does not always translate to personal happiness. While it may seem like their life is always sunshine and roses, they’re probably insecure as well. There’s always someone younger, hotter, prettier, blonder, more in shape, etc. A lot of times there is more than meets the eye, and the grass is always greener on the other side. You have to own what makes you unique and not strive for perfection and approval from outside sources.
