After College

Why It’s Okay to Have No Idea What You’ll Do After Graduation

For most of your life you’ve probably had to deal with people occasionally asking you about your future. The questions become more frequent once you start college. By the time you’re a senior approaching graduation, it seems to be the only question anyone ever asks. Having to constantly think about what you’ll do upon graduating can be annoying but can also create moments of anxiety. Especially if you have no idea what you going to do. To make matters worse, there are those seniors who know exactly what they what to do and have their whole future already planned out. But what no one ever tells college graduates is that it’s okay to have no idea. Honestly, it’s not the end of the world to not have a post-graduation plan, and here’s why.

There’s No Right Way

Society has a way of making people, especially college students, think that there is a right way and a wrong way to approach life. The truth is, that’s not true at all. If it were, everyone would be living very similar lives. All of us 20-somethings would either all be struggling college students, or we’d all be social media influencers. But if you look around you’ll notice that we’re all in different places in life and that’s because there isn’t a correct way to live. So, the whole idea that you have to have a plan after graduation is a lie; feel free to ignore it.

Life’s Not a Race

Sometimes the urgency behind having a plan after you graduate can impose ideas of life being a race. It can make you think that you have to have your whole life together as quickly as possible, and if you don’t’ that means you’re losing. Here’s a fun fact: life isn’t a race. Just like there’s no right way to live life, there’s no first place in life either. Sure, every no and then you see someone #winning but that doesn’t mean you’re taking an L. It simply means they’ve reached a milestone in life that you have yet to reach.

No Plan Is Perfect

Having a plan after graduation can seem like a great idea, but in the grand scheme of things it might not be so great after all. Imagine having your whole life planned and then you’re met with some sort of obstacle that completely throws you off. Sounds terrible, right? Well unplanned obstacles are a natural part of life. No matter how perfect you plan might seem, it’s not. So, the next time you’re feeling pressured to map out your life keep in mind that things may not go as planned so why bother.

You Can’t Predict the Future

Constantly asking someone what they’re going to do in the future is almost equivalent to asking them to predict the future. In many interviews with some of the world’s most successful people, they’ll tell you that they had no idea they’d be where they are today. So, the next time someone asks you, “what are you going to do in the future” try to remember that most people can’t predict the future, so it’s okay that you can’t either.

Everyone Is Clueless

Most of the time when you ask someone what they plan to do in any area of they’re life, not just after graduation, they’re completely clueless. They might have an idea of what they want but they truly don’t really know. Sometimes the only plan people actually have is to just do something and hope for the best. So, it’s okay if your post-graduation plans consist of flying by the seat of your pants because you have no idea what you’re doing.
