Here’s Why It’s OK To Be Single Your First Year Of College

Embarking on your first year of college can be intimidating. Moving out or moving away means figuring out how to take care of yourself and asserting your independence. For some, it means leaving behind significant others and struggling with being alone. It can mean starting over or possibly searching for someone new. In your freshmen year of college, you will learn much more about yourself than you ever have before. Here’s why it is OK to be single your first year of college.

1) You Make Your Own Schedule

Being single your first year of college while determining your new schedule can be a blessing in many ways. You don’t have to take anyone else into account but yourself while figuring out what kind of schedule works for you. You can decide to take a night class and sleep in or fill up your schedule with all those amazing art classes you have read so much about. You get to fill your day with things that you want to do for you.

2) Meet New People

One of the scariest parts for some people when starting out somewhere new is meeting new people. Putting yourself out there and making new friends and even taking part in casual dating is a part of the college experience. Going stag to college events is quite empowering once you muster the courage to do so and harnessing that independence is a big step in your college years.

3) You Figure Out What Works for You

Being single your first year of college helps you to figure out what kind of person you are. This may sound deep, I know, but it’s true. It sometimes takes some time on your own in new surroundings to experience some personal epiphanies.

4) You Make Decisions for Yourself

Go get an early dinner at 3 p.m. or a late breakfast at noon. Watch those movies on Netflix that you have been dying to see. Make plans and do things when you want to do them. Making these decisions by yourself for yourself is important when you are a young woman. It’ll help you to realize that your time is important.

5) You Will be Much More Focused

Nothing is more distracting than day dreaming about that dinner date later. Being single your first year of college means prioritizing your studies. In your first year, you will be floored by what is expected of you academically. But you can do it, and limiting certain distractions will be the perfect way to start your academic career.

6) You Get Some Quality Time with Your Best Friends

It is easy to get wrapped up in your studies and social events, but when you get to make time for your best friends (and some new ones you met at orientation) and spend more time with them, that kind of quality time is just good for the soul. And surrounding yourself with your girls is the perfect support system for your freshman year.

7) You Get to Spend Quality Time with Yourself

Having a great relationship with your best friends is great, but also having a great relationship with yourself is vital. Being single means spending time with yourself and figuring out what you truly want out of life and future relationships. Take yourself out to museums and movies, read all those books you’ve been dying to pry open. Take time for yourself and learn what truly makes you happy at this moment in time. Surrounding yourself with people can sometime deafen the internal voice telling you which way to go, so finding occasional solitude can really help you to determine who you are and to get to know yourself and love yourself.
