Sleepovers were the girly thing during childhood, and girl’s holidays are the thing to do during adulthood. There is nothing like a week or more away with your best friends full of laughter, sharing secrets, letting loose and attracting the odd bit of drama. Memories made on these holidays last a lifetime and are all part of growing up. Girl’s holidays shouldn’t have to stop when your group starts settling down in relationships; in fact, it is healthy to go on a girls holiday even if you’re in a relationship. Here’s a list of reasons why:
Although you’re in a relationship, this doesn’t mean that you have to only live life as part of a couple from now on. Your partner shouldn’t hold you back or stop you from doing all of the things you want to do, or that you did when you were single. In fact, you should both encourage each other to go on separate holiday’s as a sign that you trust one another, but also that you support each other’s right to space and freedom. Also, it is healthy to go on a girl’s holiday even if you’re in a relationship, because when you are with your girls, you are reminded of the person that you truly are (cheesy I know). Naturally people might change slightly when they get in a relationship and when they get older, but your girlfriends know everything about you and everything you have gone through, so going on a girl’s holiday helps you to keep in touch with who you really are.
‘Distance makes the heart grow fonder’. This saying couldn’t be more relevant. It’s healthy to go on a girl’s holiday even if you’re still in a relationship because it isn’t natural to spend every waking minute of every day with your partner. This can be suffocating and poisonous. You need your time apart and a girls holiday can be the best medicine. Also, distance is healthy and so is allowing yourself to miss your partner. When you’re away, you’re bound to think about your partner– time apart will make you both realise how much you love and need one another. Plus, you will look forward to seeing each other so much after (also think about how great the sex will be after a little break!).
I am not saying that you hide part of who you are when you get into a relationship, not at all. In fact, it is the opposite, you should be able to let your guard down and be your true self. However, the way you act around your friends is different compared to how you might interact with your partner or your family for example. With your girlfriends you are able to really let all your inhibitions go and it doesn’t matter what sort of state you get in as long as you are safe and have one another’s backs (I found myself crawling up the strip on my last girls holiday!). Relationships can be fun but when you are with friends you experience a different kind – a kind of fun that shouldn’t end just because you get in a relationship.
The last reason why it’s healthy to go on a girls holiday even if you’re in a relationship is to maintain a healthy balance between seeing friends, family, and your partner. Often, and mostly at the start of relationships, people tend to drop their friends in favour of their partner and this can lead to friends drifting apart or cutting ties altogether. Therefore, it is healthy to go on a girl’s holiday because it allows you to reconnect with your girls and spend proper quality time with them gossiping and catching up. It is vital not to lose your girls because let’s be real: friends are for life but a partner might not be…
