Why Being A Germaphobe Will Ruin Your Relationship

Being a germaphobe in a relationship is a real thing, and not ever person can handle it. Here's some ways it can ruin your relationship!

As a self proclaimed germaphobe, I’ve ended and distanced myself from a few friendships due to that person’s hygiene habits. Imagine giving a friend a hug and taking a huge whiff of body odor or being at the gym and having someone’s sweat fling right on you while you’re running on the treadmill! I honestly feel like Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in the movie Bubble Boy. Yes, germs are important but living in cities like LA, NYC and Boston means it’s going to be dirty as fuck! Whether you take public transportation or sitting on a bench at the park, you’re bound to be surrounded by germs that will make you and others sick! Being a germaphobe has definitely ruined some of my relationships because hygiene is important to me! Here are a few reasons why being a germaphobe will mess up your relationships.

Friends May Not Follow Your House Rules

The most disrespect thing you could do to a germaphobe is jumping onto their bed after taking public transportation. If you’ve lived in Boston and taken the dreaded orange line, there is definitely a high chance you’re sitting on a seat that is filled with poop and pee residue! If someone jumps onto your furniture with their winter coats, it’s basically transferring that residue onto your bed! When my friends come over, they must take off their shoes and coats to either stand around my place or sit on my couch that is covered with a blanket. After my friends leave, I throw the blanket in the washer plus mop the floors. So there’s a huge chance my friends are rarely invited to my apartment due to being a germaphobe. This is one of the reasons why being a germaphobe can mess with your relationships.

There’s A Chance Of You Rarely Engaging Into Intimacy!

Let’s be real, sex is nasty in certain aspects. You’re letting someone connect with you physically by being naked and ingesting their bodily fluids. This is where hygiene involving the body comes to play, if you smell a certain way before having sex theres a chance a germaphobe will decline sex or tell you to take a shower first! There’s a chance of catching some sort of disease if you’re not being careful while having sex. Although sex can spread germs so does kissing! There’s a high chance, you might end up kissing with bad breath. Halitosis is serious, you can’t cure bad breath unless you go to the dentist or brush your teeth. Do you know how many bacteria can live in your mouth for months!? Imagine having oral sex with someone who has improper teeth hygiene, there’s a chance you’ll have food pieces and residue on your genitals. Its best to let that person about their hygiene habits.

You Fear Meeting New People

My biggest fear is shaking an acquaintance’s hand. Depending on the person, there’s a chance you’ve shook hands with someone who doesn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. I always feel the need to use a whole bottle of hand sanitizer after shaking someone’s hand. I’ve declined shaking my friends hands just because they looked suspect of not cleaning after themselves. It can also mess with your life because you may not use door handles. There are studies showing that door handles are extremely dirty! I will kick a door or ask my friend to open it especially if it’s a door in a public building. That can frustrating to some people, it can cause someone to not invite you to certain events because your fear of catching any germs. This is absolutely a reason why being a germaphobe can mess with your relationships.
