When You’re Broke And Desperately Need A Job At Penn State

The fall semester is quickly ending, and the leaves are beginning to fall off of the trees. You begin to realize that college is no joke, and money goes as quickly as the changing of the seasons. It’s not just the tuition that comes in full force, but it is the 4 AM Uber Calls, the Midnight Munchies, or the constant need to keep buying more Penn State T-Shirts that you already have enough of. Just admit it, you’re broke, bored, and don’t know how to handle yourself. Every time you look in your wallet, there is still nothing there, and when you swipe your card at Panera Bread downtown, it gets declined. This is officially rock bottom, but don’t worry there is way to get out of it. You can get a job at Penn State!

Penn State University may be an expensive school to attend, but there are many opportunities to fill your wallet up. My name is Lani Gorczynski, and I am a freshman here at Penn State University. I know what its like to be a college student, and I know the struggle of wanting to buy clothes or food and not having any money to do it. Luckily, at Penn State, there are many ways to get jobs. When I walk downtown, I see a list of company’s looking to hire students just like you and me, and I’m here to list some of them.

1. MACY’S

It’s that time of the year again, and Macy’s Nittany is already decorated for Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the holiday season, it tends to get extra busy with an abundance of “hungry” shoppers. Many are looking for the best outfit’s or appliance’s as presents for Christmas or even Thanksgiving treats. Since it will be getting busy during the season, Macy’s is looking for part-time worker’s to give their time up and work. The company is offering, Seasonal Holiday Retail Merchandising, Early Mornings, Seasonal Holiday Retail Cosmetics – Beauty Advisor, and Seasonal Holiday Retail Sales in the morning and afternoon. Macy’s Nittany is located close to Penn State University, and it only takes a short bus ride or car ride there. It is a perfect job for a college student that is struggling, and is trying to get a little bit of extra money!

2. Order-Up

At Penn State University, we have this lovely invention called order-up. No matter what time or day of the week it is, order up will be at your service. OrderUp is an online food ordering platform that allows people to discover restaurants in their hometown and then order online directly from this website. I used order up multiple times, and I know how busy it must get delivering to about 40,000 students if they are craving Chinese food or Insomnia Cookies. In State College, PA, Order Up is looking for people like you and me to work for the company. They offer 20 dollars an hour, and are very flexible with their scheduling and hours. You can either work part-time or full-time as a driving/delivery job. Yes! I said it, flexible, which means you will be able to get around your busy schedule, and still be able to make some cash!

3. Sauly Boy’s

Sauly Boy’s is a new restaurant that is located close to Penn State’s Campus! The restaurant’s address is 124 S. Allen Street Downtown State College, PA. At this restaurant they sell hot dog’s, distinctive burgers, loaded fries, and Stella’s Gelato. Sauly Boy’s is open from 11 Am to 9 Pm, and they are looking to hire! The restaurant is looking for line cooks, and counter help around the restaurant. The job has an excellent starting pay, and to me that is a ringing to my ears. To apply, you have to go on the website (www.saulyboys.com) and get started! Soon you will be flipping burger’s and getting checks to spend!

4. Insomnia Cookies

Insomnia cookies specialize in delivering, making, and eating warm, delicious cookies that melt right into your mouth. Since a Freshman at Penn State, this was the first time I had an Insomnia Cookie, and lets just say they were a life changing experience. Insomnia Cookies is located Downtown in State College, right near Penn State’s campus. I have walked here before from East Halls, and it is not a bad walk at all! Insomnia cookies deliver from 10 Am to 3 AM, Monday through Friday, and Noon to 3 AM on weekends. The company is always looking for workers and people to hire. The job titles range from being a driver to being a shift manager. To apply you can go downtown to Insomnia Cookies which is located right near D.P. Dough, or if you don’t have much time, you can also apply online. What’s better than being surrounded by cookies, and earning money?

5. Urban Outfitters

When I think of Urban Outfitters, I think of the store that every college girl needs to experience. They have almost any piece of clothing you’re looking for. Whether you are going to a Frat Party at night, or just want to look extra stylish for class, Urban Outfitters will have the perfect outfit and necessities for you. Urban Outfitters is also located very close to Penn State’s campus, and is located downtown in State College. Every time I walk past the store, I have to force myself not to go in because I will buy everything, and unfortunately I DO NOT have the funds for that. Next time I walk past I might actually have to walk in because they are hiring! How amazing would it be to work at your favorite clothing store, and get paid to fantasize over clothes all day! Sooner or later, you will be buying the clothes and not just looking at them.

Those were just a few store’s that I know that are close to campus and are hiring college student’s like us.

What I mean as in “us” is we are all busy and broke. Many of the jobs I have listed are flexible when it comes to student’s, and understand that we are also full-time in our work at Penn State University. As a freshman here, I know how tough life can be when you’re broke. You can’t buy clothes, you can’t buy your favorite salad from your favorite local restaurant, and you feel like you can’t do anything. The feeling of desperateness is over! The jobs I’ve listed are waiting for YOU to apply. Soon, instead of looking at en empty wallet, you will be looking at a wallet with so much money you won’t know which local store downtown to spend it at!
