What To Wear For Formal Events In College

The first week of school is always busy. If you’re involved in Greek Life, your schedule is probably swamped with recruitment events, formals, and more. Part of the fun of going to a formal event is dressing for the occasion. Look no further for the perfect outfit: here are ten looks that you can replicate.

1. Preppy Pledge

Are you going through sorority recruitment? Whether you’re a PNM or a lifelong member, you’ll be sure to make a lasting impression with this preppy look. Loveshackfancy is the place to shop for elegant, yet playful pieces. This dress stood out to me as something I would wear during recruitment week. The length is just right, the pattern is adorable, and it’s not too formal, not too casual. Imagine this dress paired with platform espadrilles and little gold hoops. I’m in love.

2. Dainty For A Date

With the arrival of the fall semester comes a fresh new dating season. Though some dates might not go as planned, at least you can take the opportunity to dress up. Let’s pretend for a moment that college students are incredibly romantic. Say your special someone is taking you on a picnic or for a nice dinner. For a formal setting like that, I recommend a simple linen dress. The one in the picture is flirty and fun, while still refined. I especially love the layered skirt and ruffled sleeves.

3. Syllabus Week In Style

Who says you shouldn’t dress up for syllabus week? While some people might opt for sweats and tee shirts, don’t be afraid to dress a little more formal. I’m not saying to show up to your lecture in a ballgown. But a casual maxi dress and sandals never hurt anyone! For a more scholarly vibe, wear a short sleeve shirt underneath your dress. I’m also a fan of Converse with maxi dresses, so if you have a pair, throw them on too. Show everyone that you’ve got beauty and brains.

4. Formal Fashionista

One of my favorite aspects of Greek Life are the formals. Any chance I get to dress in a gown, I’ll take. For more…well…formal formals, you’ll want an outfit that fits the energy of the occasion. Slit dresses are having a moment right now, and I’m here for it. Slits are such an easy way to spruce up a simple dress. I think the style of the dress in the pic above is perfect for a formal. Classic, sexy, and oh-so chic. If you’re looking for something more vibrant, search for a similar dress in neon. Crimson red or kelly green would look amazing.

5. Drip-loma

That headline was brutal, I know. I couldn’t help myself. Anyway, if you’re graduating this year like I am (tear, tear), you might already be searching for your outfit for the big day. You’ll want to keep it formal, since graduation marks such an important milestone. My suggestion is to wear a long, flowing dress that will be visible underneath your gown. I’m obsessed with this stunning purple one, especially all the frills. Bigger heels are also advised, helping you stand out in a crowd of soon-to-be college grads. Don’t forget to wear waterproof mascara in case any tears are shed.

6. Trendy T.A.

Here’s a formal look for all the T.A.’s out there. Show the students who’s in charge (sort of) with a professorial, dark academia outfit. When it gets colder in the fall, break out your sharpest blazer or trench coat to complete the ensemble. Throw on a classy pair of trousers (my tan satin ones are my favorite), a white blouse, and if you want to get preppy, oxfords and a headband. For more accessorizing, replace your boring old backpack with a crossbody bag. Canvas tote bags are also cute (and way more sustainable)!

7. Bid Day Beauty

For some organizations, there might be a preestablished dress code for bid day. Let’s assume that there isn’t one. So what to wear for the big reveal? If you’re ready to make a splash as a new member, sparkle your sisters with a fun romper. Rompers are more relaxed than dresses and are just the right amount of formal for the occasion. Plus, they’re a great way to show off your bubbly and bright personality.

8. Senior Gala Glam

Satin is the way to go for a formal look. If your school has a senior gala, you might want to bookmark this dress for the event. Even if you’re a freshman, it’s never too early to start planning! Long satin dresses never fail to impress me; they’re so sleek and glamorous, like something an old Hollywood starlet would wear. When worn with loose curls and gold jewelry, this dress is sure to turn heads. I love the emerald color of the dress above; I think the color and the fabric complement each other nicely. Silver and sky blue are other gorgeous colors for silky dresses.

9. Be The Belle Of The Grad Party…

See Also

Show up to your friends’ grad parties in style. For grad parties, you’ll want a look that’s a bit less formal, though still put together. A mini tube dress works well for the occasion, like the one in the picture above. It never hurts to go with a mini skirt and blouse combo, too. Whatever you choose to wear, make sure you’ll be comfortable in it in warm weather. Grad parties usually involve standing out in the summer sun, so don’t overheat in layers and long sleeves.

10. …And Steal The Show At Your Own!

For a light and airy material, go with linen. Linen dresses are summer staples, making them the best outfit to wear for grad parties. People will congratulate you on receiving your diploma and having an eye for fashion. Double whammy. To spiff up the look, add some platform sandals or espadrilles, simple jewelry, and a cute tote to carry all your grad presents in. You’ll need an extra large bag to fit your family’s cards in (plus all the cash and gift cards inside).

The average college student spends half of their time in sweatpants and tee shirts. I may have just made up that statistic, but it feels true. When you have the chance to dress up, take it!
