What To Hang On Your Wall Instead Of A Tapestry

Not only are tapestries over-used and too common of a wall decoration for dorm rooms, they don’t add a personal touch to your space. Treat yo self by taking the time to make your personal mark on your dorm for this upcoming school year. Below are several decorations, and things you already own that will bring your personality out on your dorm room walls for this upcoming school year. Scroll down to #’s 5-7 for my free ideas!

1. “I’m Not Moving My Tapestry, Thank You Very Much.”

Alrighty, then! I heard you loud and clear and that is why you can use these curtain string lights with your pre-existing tapestry. Hang these floor-to-ceiling Christmas lights in front or behind your tapestry to add mood lighting to your hideaway from everyone else. Check out the least expensive set of curtain string lights I could find on Amazon. Also, peep the picture below to see how no tapestry for these curtain string lights is no problem.

2. Warm, Graphic Prints

These lesser-known artists have precious and relatable prints that will have your friends begging for you to share your sources. Crawl into Emily Tumen’s digital gallery for female-inspired graphic design prints. Danilo Cuevas’s work with familiar furry friends and food can help make your space your own. A mix and match of their work on your walls is guaranteed to speak to who you are and what you enjoy in life. While you’ll probably laugh at the relatable value of Emily Tumen’s work, be prepared to ‘awe’ at David’s charming paintings.

3. Removable Vinyl Decals

What I like about wall decals is that they are unlike anything you can hang on your walls. Pick from hundreds of styles, shapes, and price ranges, then smack them on your wall for a unique look. Try out these gold polka dots on Amazon (you can also click here for multi-colored polka dots). Pop them around your photo wall for some extra shimmer, or create an entire wall with them cascading from the ceiling.

4. Your Hometown or Country Flag

Where you grew up is an important part of who you are. Have your walls reflect your story by pinning your hometown or home country flag on one of your walls. Maybe your hometown is among the 150 U.S. cities that have flags!

5. T-Shirts or Jerseys

Was it the half-marathon you ran last summer, or the tee from your first concert in the seventh grade? Hang it up to add more ‘you’ in your home away from home. I hung one of those corny “Keep Calm and Carry On” t-shirts in my dorm only because it had the name of my little brother’s college on it. Every so often, my eyes would catch that hanging tee and it would remind me to text (or respond to) my bro. Nothing Earth-shattering here, but a hanging t-shirt of yours can help ground you when you feel in over your head at school.

6. A Homemade Poster

Did your friends ever make you one of those “#17 On The Field, But #1 In My Heart” posters? Unless it was made by your ex, pin or tape it up on your wall. What’s more ‘you’ than something made only for you? Goodbye generic, geodesic sun.

7. Write On A Poster

Depending on how artsy you’re feelin’, you can either scribble a quote down or create your own piece of art. Using your Sharpies, highlighters, pencils, or crayons, put a quote on a poster or a piece of paper. Whether your intention is to motivate, make a statement, or to be funny, your personality will be felt every time you walk in.

Picture those days that included burying your face in your pillow ‘cus you just couldn’t deal in that moment. These personalized tapestry alternatives can help create a warm ‘home away from home’ feeling that we all deserve.
