Ah, college, what a time to be alive. A time to find out who you are, meet your best friends, discover your passion, and of course, a time to be extremely broke. But never fear, you can still have fun without breaking the bank. Here is a list of free and cheap activities to do when you’re broke AF at Florida State University!
Landis Green is the perfect place to go when you don’t have a penny to your name. From the President’s Ice Cream Social to Puppy Parties, there is always something free going on (and usually with free food!!!!). If you just want to have a relaxing day, you can bring a blanket and park yourself under a tree and just enjoy the view (the view being all of the shirtless men playing catch or walking their adorable puppies).
The ASLC shows a ton of different movies each semester including: blockbusters, indie movies, alternatives, and much, much more. There is something for everyone! Plus, every semester the ASLC strives to show movies that haven’t been released in theaters yet. In Spring 2016, they showed Andy Samberg’s new movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and Andy Samberg himself showed up to promote the movie! Many free (or reduced price with FSU student ID) productions also take place at the Ruby Diamond Auditorium and the Club Downunder!
The Challenger Learning Center is a hidden gem that is less than 5 minutes away from campus. Student tickets for IMAX films are $7 (Documentaries) and $9 (Hollywood). That’s cheaper than buying a student movie ticket at AMC. The theatre usually shows hit blockbusters such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Rogue One: A Starwars Story at the same time as other commercial movie theaters. Not only that but, if you want to learn something cool, student tickets for the Downtown Digital Dome Theatre & Planetarium are only $4.75. Plus, there is a free planetarium show on the first Saturday of every month!
The Florida State University Reservation is less than 15 minutes away from campus. You can choose to either drive there or just take the S.A.F.E Bus (operates until 6 pm) or the RezRide (runs during normal Rez hours) to and from the recreation area for free! At the Rez, you can explore Lake Bradford on a kayak, paddleboard, or canoe. There are also beach volleyball courts and a challenge course. Entry to the Rez is free with a current FSU student ID.
FSU offers more than 30 diverse group fitness classes that are free for all FSU students. With almost 100 class sessions a week, it’s hard to think of a reason not to go to these classes! All you have to do to join a class is register at campusrec.fsu.edu with your FSU log in information You can register as early as 25 hours before the class time.
Explore living exhibits of wildlife, nature trails, and gardens at the Tallahassee Museum. If you prefer to view the Museum’s 52 acres of spectacular flora and fauna from above, the Museum’s zip line and aerial adventure course are for you! These courses are slightly more expensive than everything else on this list, but the Tallahassee Museum always has promotions that can put these fun activities within a broke college student’s budget.
Coli and Tabu are the best clubs to go to if you really want to dance! There is a massive dance floor and several bars with cheap drinks to quench your thirst. Plus, there are free Party Buses that leave from FSU Campus to get you to and from Coli and Tabu for free!
It’s 1 am, you’re 5 seasons into Gilmore Girls and you realize you are hungry AF. What could possibly be open? Well, Gumby’s is open till 2:30 am and they deliver! Is there anything better than a large cheese pizza for only $5.99?
If you want to see an extraordinary show completely produced by FSU students, then go watch the FSU Flying High Circus! Our circus is one of only two collegiate circuses! There are usually performances for Halloween, Parent’s Weekend, along with an annual Spring showcase. Admission is free with a current FSU student ID.
