What To Do When You Have Too Much Stuff

When you’re in college, more often than not, your room will be too small to hold everything that you want to bring from home. Or, over time, you’ll find that there just isn’t enough room for your growing collection of comic books and video games, or the new winter line of high-end fashions. So, what’s a person to do when they have too much stuff? Here are a few options for those who need to know what to do when you have too much stuff.

1. HOME SWEET HOME

While many may not like the idea, sending off items with your folks when you have too much stuff is probably the easiest option available. Most parents wouldn’t mind, they won’t charge you for it, and you know they’ll be in a safe place. (Unless your folks get it into their heads to sell some of your stuff because they think you don’t need it, but that’s neither here nor there.) What some do, and I can say this from experience, is that each time you visit your parents, wherever they be, take home stuff you know you won’t mind leaving there, whether it be old clothes, certain books, souvenirs, and other knick knacks. This especially applies to clothes. If you have stuff in your closet you haven’t worn in months, and don’t see yourself wearing it anytime soon, drop it off. Or donate. But we’ll get to that.

2. RENT SOME ROOM

Most cities have storage units that charge monthly rates. In fact, there are multiple storage units within any given city. If you have a little extra cash to burn, you could rent one out and store some of the larger items you have. They come and in a variety of sizes, some big enough for car. Be warned, the rates range from fifty to well over three hundred dollars. In addition, you have to take the cost within your monthly budget. You always run the risk of having to close your account and emptying out the storage unit in an effort to save some cash.

3. CHARITY…

This mostly applies to clothing, but you can just as easily donate books, comics, or video games. You just have to find the right place. But back to the main topic, considering how each season brings a new line of clothes, or that people are bound to grow out of their old clothes, giving some of your stuff away can easily resolve some space issues. In addition, you would be helping others that want/need the items in question. Or, if money is center stage in your mind…

4. …OR PROFIT

…you could also sell your things. eBay, Amazon, even going around your neighborhood or apartment complex and knocking on doors. Ask your roommates or classmates while you’re at it. Opportunities for selling or bartering for other things will always be there. You just have to find them. However, and this should be obvious, don’t go trading your Star Wars T-Shirt for a Metallica. While you may use that T-shirt from now one, you still have the problem of space. When trading, try asking for favors or stick to cash.

5. CUT BACK

The simplest answer is the most obvious one. When you have too much stuff, it can be interpreted as a sign that you’ve been spending too much. If your closet’s full, don’t purchase any new clothes. If your bookshelf is full, keep a list of all the books you want to buy. Same for comics, DVD’s, videogames, etc.

It’s easy for the number of items within your possession to make your living space feel crowded. That’s a normal part of adjusting to college life, or adult life, for that matter. But there are a number of solutions to combat this issue, so I wouldn’t worry too much about this sort of thing. Any other ways to combat this problem of when you have too much stuff that you know about? Let us know in the comments below!
