Some say a candle, or some fairy lights can complete a room. Others say a small rug, or patterned curtain will tie off a look. We say a succulent (or 100) gives a room layers of personality and colour. Whether you’re a plant person or not, you need a collection of succulents that’ll harmonise with your personality and show off your natural being. Scroll down to find out which succulent will match both your home, and your star sign.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Living Stones
Living Stones are the misfits of the succulent world. Just like you, they’re fiercely independent and wilful, surviving without water in rough stony ground or soft spongy grass with ease. These aren’t high maintenance plants, which means your curious personality won’t be restricted by a demanding care routine which beckons you home.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Jelly Bean
You are a winding watery princess who needs a flush dewy succulent to care for. As this plant grows, it sprawls and winds around itself dissolving the boundaries between it and the soils. It embodies harmony and freshness in its dulled green colours and red tips, ultimately reflecting your own mystic charm, Pisces.
Aries (March 21 – April 19) Paddle Plant
Being like everyone else is so not your seed, but the Paddle Plant is.The Paddle Plant sheds regularly to make room for brighter, stronger leaves, in the same way you keep yourself on your toes by trailblazing new and unfamiliar journeys. Its fiery red tips match your fiery temper, and though it craves attention, this succulent must be left to dry for long periods of time. So, lucky for you Aries, your short attention span won’t be a problem.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Snake Plant
Though it can be neglected for long periods of time and still maintain a fresh look, this succulent shrivels in the wake of incompetent carers.Your persistence and perfectionism, suits the tricky maintenance of the Snake Plant. It represents energy and, as you do too Taurus, clean living. NASA research say this plant can even improve the air quality in your home by removing toxins and pollutants while you sleep!
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Zwartkop
The dark purple Zwartkop, often known as “the black rose” has a cold exterior, protecting the most important part of the plant – its shiny yellow buds – beneath the dark foliage. You are the ‘black rose’ of star signs Gemini, for it is only once people get to know you that they see your bright and easygoing true self. This plant moves between terrains with ease, just as you too float between people and places, making fleeting friendships. You are a kindred match.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Hens and Chicks
The Hens & Chicks succulent is a family of direct duplicates from the mother ‘hen’. They connect with one another through deep roots, to feather strong family nests. A Hens & Chick’s life cycle is quick and dispersive, and much like you, dear Cancer, this succulent is sensitive to changes in the land beneath it. Its jaded colours and natural scent will nurture the cosiness of your living room; reflecting your own sense of compassion and creativity in the process.
Leo (July 23 – August 22) Plush Plant
This succulent is called Plush for a reason. Its tiny silver hairs shimmer in the sunlight, growing best in daylight hours. Like you, this is a strong, resilient plant which sparkles up any room. You’re a drama queen, and the Plush is a bit of a diva. Repotting this baby is a regular requirement, so be prepared to invest as much time caring for this plant as you do your own dreams.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Aloe Vera
Virgo, Aloe Vera is your spirit cactus. As a helper and a health freak, you prioritise not only the wellbeing of yourself, but those you care about. In its purest form, Aloe Vera has endless medicinal values. Channel the soothing nature of the plant to rehydrate your being and fill the room with beautiful eromas of calm and cleanliness.
Libra (September 23 – October 22) Flaming Katy
As a beautifier, you are balanced and graceful. Just as a Libra can fill a room with their smile; the Flaming Katy’s romantic colours will make any darkened space shine. Placing this showy succulent on your plain white coffee or dining table not only makes for a striking centrepiece, but subtly reflects your flare for harmony and balance.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Crown of Thorns
Look at how pretty you are! In Thailand there is a legend that the number of flowers that bloom on a Crown of Thorns predicts the future of the plant-keeper. So, make sure to take good care of this one!
The Crown of Thorns’ obnoxious pink leaves mirror your smouldering and sexy side. This mysterious succulent is masterful in its beauty, developing slowly from simple greens, to vibrant pink and orange droplets. This plant oozes class, and provides a subtle counterpart to your otherwise adventurous decor – you’re quite the trendsetter after all.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Red Hot Poker
You are the fire element. As a worldly adventurer, you chase the impossible. The Red Hot Poker epitomises your personality as it grows to impossible sizes, dispersing bold colours to far away spots often occupied by stronger plants. A tall Red Hot Poker is the perfect tool to show off your ‘dream big’ mentality. Make a statement by lining your garden path with these bad boys – you make your own rules.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Agave ‘Sharkskin Shoes’
A master planner such as yourself needs a powerful, tactical plant to frame your front room. The Agave has a big presence; its colours of deep green exuding serenity into your hard-working (and sometimes cold) atmosphere. Like you Capricorn, it has a strong spine to remain tough in the harshest of conditions. Don’t worry about being too busy to keep this plant looking healthy, because with or without you, the Agave never gives up.
