What most people don’t know about sororities, is the exact reason I joined one. Sororities came about when women were first allowed to go to college, as a means for us to stick together. How powerful is that? This is what it’s like to be in a sorority.
Let me tell you a quick story. The first day I joined my sorority, my boyfriend (the first guy I said “I love you” to) cheated on me & I was an absolute mess. I ran home alongside probably hundreds of other Panhellenic women to a chapter that I knew NO ONE in (except for the amazing few I got to meet during the week) and these girls literally welcomed me with open arms. I’m talking wiped my tears, fixed my makeup, told me what to say back to his pathetic ass and turned it in to one of the best days of my life. THAT is sisterhood, THAT is what a lot of people don’t know about being in a sorority.
Yes, we tailgate at frat houses, wear a t-shirt with letters on it almost every day, and eat dinner together every night, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about being a part of something much bigger than ourselves. At such a young age, we truly are making a difference. We raise tens of THOUSANDS of dollars for our own charities, for other sorority’s charities, for fraternity’s charities. I am so proud to be a sorority woman because of this.
A couple weeks ago, our cleaning lady’s son suffered a heart attack & passed away. She had to miss work to fly to the Dominican Republic to bury her child. We wrote her cards and raised almost $1,000 so missing work wouldn’t devastate her financially, as she already is emotionally. That is what being in a sorority is about…surrounding yourself with other beautiful, empowered women and doing this crazy college thing together, no matter what life throws at us or the people around us.
Support, love, and friendship is what it is about. My sisters have truly become, just that, sisters to me. They have stood by me through all of the ups and downs during my college years and for that I will be forever grateful. To the people that say being in a sorority is just a way of buying your friends…well, if that’s true, I’m not paying near enough.
