What It’s Like Living In A Politically Divided Household

Politically, we are living in an increasingly divided country with many differences of opinion. With that in mind, living in a politically divided household can be very hard at times. Here’s what it’s like to live in a politically divided household.

1. Debates are normal.

It’s hard to live in a politically divided household, especially if debates are the norm. It’s best to try and avoid having debates, but it’s understandable if they sometimes happen.

Watching debates on television can sometimes spark a debate of your own. Just try and avoid them, even if they are normal in your household.

2. Differences of opinion are common.

Don’t take it personally, but others might not share the same opinion as you. Even if that’s the case, differences of opinion doesn’t mean they don’t respect you.

In fact, these differences can open you up to new ideas and points of views.

3. Your feelings might get hurt.

We’ve all said something, or had something said to us that ultimately hurt our feelings. Sad to say this can happen on occasion, especially if you live in a politically divided household.

Sometimes words hurt just as much as sticks and stones.

4. Try not to take it personally.

Have you heard the infamous statement, “Don’t take it personally?” It usually means it will offend or upset you, but really when it comes to a politically divided household. Don’t. Take. It. Personally.

Family is family, and you might not always agree with them. But you gotta love them.

5. Always agree to disagree.

Whenever you’re between a rock and a hard place, always agree to disagree. It’s an easy way to end the conversation without involved parties escalating the conversation.

Just remember to keep the peace. There’s no need in trying to change someones opinion to match yours. Opinions are what separate you from the rest.

6. Facts might not be right.

There’s so much false news going around that it’s easy to get the facts wrong. If this happens, simply do some research to find the truth.

It might seem time consuming, but if you’re set on getting the facts right then it will be well worth the wait.

7. Don’t bring up specific issues that will cause an uproar.

Have you ever been in an argument and said something you know will cause a reaction? In a politically divided household it’s best to avoid such things.

Sometimes it’s good to keep things to yourself. If you know you’re going to be stuck in a heated political conversation, simply agree to disagree. No need to cause an uproar at the dinner table.

8. Try and understand the other persons point of view.

Do you get where I’m coming from? That’s something I hear on a regular basis when I’m having a politically fueled conversation. If you’re living in a politically divided household you might be hearing something similar.

It might be hard, but try and understand the other persons point of view. Even if it sounds completely bizarre to you. Although, it might sound the opposite to them.

9. Remember, they are your family.

At the end of the day, family is family. You might not always agree with them, but it’s best to keep the peace. And always remember that elections always happen and that it’s not a forever thing.

Just try and make the time there bearable.

10. Don’t hold a grudge.

For me, this is tough. I can remember the exact words someone says to me, especially if it hurt my feelings. In a politically divided household, try not to take what someone says to you personal.

But, not holding a grudge is easier said than done.
