Sorority recruitment is stressful. When I rushed, I had no idea which sorority I would like, while others already had theirs picked out. That’s the whole point, to find which sorority will be your home. I found mine in Alpha Xi Delta. Read on to know exactly what happens during sorority recruitment at George Mason University.
Even if you’re on the fence about it, I highly recommend going through recruitment. I originally didn’t want to go through recruitment because I didn’t think I would fit in. I ended up finding my people in my sorority and it definitely changed the course of my freshman year and beyond for the better.
You can usually find the link to sign up on the Panhellenic website. There, you will pay a fee to go through the recruitment process. You can also see all of the Panhellenic sororities at GMU, so you can familiarize yourself with each chapter.
This is kind of a precursor to the actual sorority recruitment at George Mason University process. You go to an orientation the day before the weekend starts. There, you get put in your small groups and meet your Rho Gamma’s. Rho Gamma’s are girls from the sororities that disaffiliate from their chapter and help potential new members (PNMs) throughout their process. They are there to help you if you are every confused or need guidance. You also meet the chapters, and learn more about them before you embark on this process. You also receive your shirt that you wear the next day. Get a lot of sleep because it’s going to be a long weekend.
At this stage, you get to meet all of the chapters and the sisters, to get a feel for the sororities. It is a really long day, you will probably end at midnight. It is a lot of the same conversation over and over again, but you get to meet some of the sisters and ask them questions, etc. It is casual so you wear the shirt you received the previous day. Rho Gamma’s recommend you wear something distinctive in addition so the sisters will recognize you. They will be talking to a lot of people, so wear something so they can recognize you.
Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking all day. Also please bring a snack and water because you probably won’t get a lot of down time. I also recommend bringing mints (not gum because you don’t want to be smacking gum while talking to the sisters) and also a fan if you get hot easily. Also, bring makeup if you want to touch up throughout the night.
Keep your mood up because it is a long day. Just keep smiling, and trust me the sisters are just as tired as you.
This is the second day and you will find out which sororities want you back. You may get invited by a lot of sororities or only a few. It is not a big deal; I only got invited back to two sororities, and it was fine. I even got to go back to my room early and take a nap.
This is a business casual day on sorority recruitment at George Mason University. This means you can wear a cute, but appropriate, dress or romper, or a blouse with nice pants. You get a longer time with to talk to the sisters, so you can ask them a bunch of questions, whether it pertains to the philanthropy or not.
You want to ask questions because it shows interest in the sorority. Some questions you can ask include: What’s your favorite memory of your sorority? Why did you choose your sorority? Why did you rush? What are the values of this sorority? Why kind of events do you do for the philanthropy and what is the philanthropy?
This is a big day of sorority recruitment at George Mason University; you’ll find out which sororities invited you back. Again, you may be invited back by a lot of chapters, or a few. This day is Sunday Best, this should be the day you are dressed your best. This is the day you get the most time with the chapter. There is also usually a ceremony and testimonies from sisters involved.
At the end of the day, you decide which sorority you like the best. If they like you back, you will most likely receive a bid.
It’s the last day, and it’s all come down to this. Your nerves are probably crazy, but you finally get a bid. Rarely, you may not get a bid, which is fine, you can still go through spring recruitment, which is way more chill if you ask me. You may get a bid from a sorority you didn’t necessarily love. It is okay, it is not the end of the world.
The last thing I have to say is trust the process. A lot of people will say this throughout the weekend, but it’s true. If a sorority didn’t invite you back, don’t waste your time pining over them if they didn’t want you. Trust the process and you will find your home.
