8 Weird Food Combinations That Work PERFECTLY

Some food combinations are soulmates, PB&J, bacon and eggs, cookies and cream…the list goes on. And then there are some food combinations that take a while to settle in your mouth. They might fight, they might challenge each other. But at the end of it all, you’ll be left with a pair of flavors that’ll leave you craving for more. Let’s bend a few food rules here and make some weird food combinations that, for some reason, just work!

1. Strawberry And Salt And Pepper

Ever wanted to bring out the sweet in your food? Well, did you know that one of the best and easiest ways to bring out sweet flavors is to simply add some salt? With a little salt on your strawberries, they become sweeter, more candy-like. And with a little pepper, another dimension of spice is added, it neutralizes the tartness, leaving the sweetness with more of a chance to come through.

2. Rainbow Sprinkles On Bread

Heard a sweet little dish called fairy bread? It’s basically rainbow sprinkles on buttered bread, and it’s addictive. This is a classic sweet treat for many children in Australia and New Zealand and sticks with them all the way into adulthood. The rest of the world scoffs in disgust at the idea. But really, it’s rainbow sprinkles on buttered bread. What’s not to like?

3. Chocolate And Cheese Pizza

Chocolate and Cheese is one of those food combinations that has gone in and out of trends over the years.  It’s a maddeningly complex mixture that is both tangy and sweet, rich and tart. Flavors that’ll leave you both thoroughly satisfied and craving for more.

The latest craze to catch on, to every food-loving Italian’s dismay, is chocolate and cheese on pizza. Mild and stringy mozzarella makes a good match with chocolate, simply because it has no real overpowering flavours. That, and it adds a whole new texture layer with the chewiness on top of melted chocolate.

4. Ice Cream And Soy Sauce

When looking for weird food combinations, pairing something salty and something sweet is always a good bet. As they say, opposites attract. A great popular example of this is salted caramel, and the strangely delicious combo of soy sauce and ice cream is no exception to this rule. In fact, it’s a combo that has been done in Japan for years and years. So really, we’re just behind on this trend.

5. Fish Fingers And Custard

When Matt Smith dipped his first fish finger into a cold bowl of custard in Doctor Who, I wonder if he realised the tsunami of weird fish finger related food culture he was setting in motion. Regardless, fish fingers and custard are officially a ‘Thing’. Capital T.

It’s not for everyone, but for others, it’s the only thing that’ll cure their Friday night hangovers. There are weirdly satisfying contrasts to note here, like a piping hot vs fresh-out-the-fridge cold, or crunchy breadcrumbs on gooey custard, fishy and salty with sweet and creamy. If that’s your thing, then you’ll love this combo.

6. Chips And Ice Cream

I wonder who the first person to dip their chips into their McFlurry was? Chips and ice cream was made big through Mc Donald’s and has since taken off with people actively eating this in their homes as a viable choice for dessert.

Much like fish fingers and custard, there’s an added bonus of there a being a hot vs. cold, sweet vs. salty taste sensation. So, which ones do you prefer? Fish fingers and custard, or chips and ice cream?

7. Scrambled Eggs And Honey

Does this food raise your IQ? Sadly not, but it was eaten daily by none other than Albert Einstein. And when you think about it, who made eggs a solely savory dish anyway? Especially when a little bit of sweetness partners so well with eggs. When had over buttered toast, this weird food combination turns into a deconstructed baked good, with eggs, butter and sugar all coming together on a bready base.

8. Peanut Butter And Chicken

When you think about weird food combinations, peanut butter on chicken is frequently mentioned. But is it really all that weird? Asian cultures have been having satay-peanut sauce on their chicken for years, so maybe we’re just a little late to the game.

This combo exhibits nutty savory flavors with the juicy saltiness of chicken. Try spreading some peanut butter lightly over a roast, or baking slowly on chicken breast, or even whisking together in a stir fry with some ginger and garlic. The possibilities are endless!

What’s your favorite out of these weird food combinations? Let me know in the comments!
