College can be a blast with themed parties for every day of the week and keggers every time you turn around, but if you’re anything like me, after the first couple semesters, you start craving a little variety to fill up the hours you’re not nose deep in the books. So, if you are looking for something to do that doesn’t involve a keg and cheap beer, here are my suggestions of activities for college students.
Yoga classes are often quite affordable, ranging from $5-15 for drop-ins, and if you keep your eye open, you can even find free ones on the weekend. What better way to deal with the stress of college life and form a healthy habit.
With the rising popularity of ‘fun runs’, there’s usually at least one every weekend that rewards its finishers with a celebratory beer, donut, or, my favorite, ends at a pizza place. So, con your friend into coming and walk or jog your way to a good time.
It’s ridiculous how expensive it is to go to the movies these days, but luckily matinees are still pretty affordable. Also, it’s worth a quick search to see if there are any theaters in your area that play $3 shows.
I was amazed at some of the classes I could take for credits at my University. From backpacking to sea kayaking, to cross-country skiing, the options were endless, and they all counted towards credits. Now we all know you can’t make every class fit into your degree, but if the opportunity comes, take the class. It will give you a fun activity to do on a few of your weekends, and you’ll come out a couple credits ahead.
If you and your friends are looking for something to do that doesn’t take you too far from home, check out Groupon and pick something randomly, like mini-golf, neon bowling, or a cooking class.
Find a trail online, grab some snacks and a pair of comfortable shoes, and just explore. You don’t need any money or equipment, just an adventurous spirit, and maybe a friend or two.
For me, it was crepes, quiches, and carrot cake, but it can be anything. Think of a dish you’ve always wanted to try, and have a go at making it yourself. The best part about this is, you get to eat it afterward unless you burn it… then order pizza.
Text your trusty group of friends and have everyone bring their favorite board game and snack. You can keep score or not, either way, you’ll have a solid night with friends. This makes for some great activities for college students.
If you are lucky enough to have a place with a fire pit, even if it’s a communal one in an apartment complex, host a fire for your less fortunate friends. Roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and tell stories… just don’t burn down the building, fire safety and all.
Use your party-free weekend to plan, organize, and execute the perfect prank on an unsuspecting friend. Make it anonymous so they spend days wondering who could be so brilliantly evil. Beware though, this may come with high consequences.
