We all know that if you talk to any student on campus, chances are they’re either from the Bay or LA. There are a few basic characteristics, from what they wear to how they act, that make it easy to tell where someone’s from. Here are 10 ways you can tell a Cal Poly SLO student grew up in the Bay.
That red circle with the two lines is hard not to notice. Every corner you turn, in the UU, the Ave, or even the hallway on your way to class – you’re bound to see at least a handful a day.
It’s such a thing. Holding a drink in any situation makes you look 10 times cooler than you actually are. And, if you’re stumped trying to answer a question, you can sip on your beverage to stall the time. Definitely a tell-tale sign of a Cal Poly SLO student who grew up in the bay!
No one told you it doesn’t matter what brand of bag you carry in college. Jansport vs. North Face isn’t a big deal anymore, but you bought this backpack before you knew that.
A summer tradition is to go to at least one country concert before school starts in the fall. Even if you don’t know who the artists are, and have to pay $50 for an Uber just to sit in traffic and miss the opening act, a bay student will still attend Shoreline. Now you can sing along to the music that’s always blasting in the UU.
Every girl needs her basic leggings, and then another pair, and some shorts, and oh wait, sweats? And yeah boys, we see that little circle right above your knee on the back of your left leg.
The place to see and be seen. You can count on going to Maggiano’s at least twice a year for someone’s birthday. Don’t pretend you’re not expecting it. Try to act cool when you see that Lambo roll up right outside that one hotel.
Most people turn their heads when they see a Tesla, but not a Bay Area kid. Seeing a Tesla is just as normal as seeing a Honda.
“I’m headed to the city for the Giant’s game.” “I’m going shopping in the city this weekend in Union Square.”
You don’t even play a sport but you feel the need to carry such a large water bottle and follow the trend. It keeps your drinks cold for days and you’ll fit right in at Cal Poly.
Growing up in the Bay has given you access to the top tech companies out there. 3rd graders are walking around with their brand-new iPhone X’s and toddlers play on their iPads. On the first day of class the kid next to you whips out his MacBook, puts his iPhone down on the desk, checks his Apple Watch, and finally takes out his AirPods so he can listen to the lecture.
