Some people love their work, some people need a new job pronto. If you are wondering if you should leave the job that you are in and move onto something new, these tips might help you. Here are ten clear signs that you might need a new job.
This is a horrible feeling. You alarm goes off, you look at the clock, and you just feel your stomach drop. You know you need to get up, but your body won’t play the game. You lie there staring at the ceiling or scrolling through Twitter on your phone, wondering if there is any way you can get out of going to work. This is a clear sign that you need a new job. No career is worth feeling this miserable every day.
Or the blues of whatever day is your day off. It’s Sunday evening, you’ve just finished eating your dinner, and you know soon it will be time to go to bed and the weekend will be over. Suddenly, the few hours you have left of your evening seem pointless and tinged with sadness. That little piece of weekly freedom that you crave is coming to an end and it is killing you. If this happens to you, then you need a new job. If the thought of going to work is consuming so much of your time, it is going to have a serious effect on your mental health.
Why is it that time seems to move at a totally different speed when you are at work? Is your workplace in another space-time continuum? If you find yourself constantly staring at the clock, urging the second to tick by faster, then you need a new job. Work can be a chore at times, but if you enjoy what you do then your days will pass much quicker. If you are unhappy, those long hours will feel like mini eternities.
Everybody loves a gossip in the workplace. Whether you are moaning about that one boss you all hate, or debating whether two of your colleagues are secretly hooking up in the mail room, workplace gossip is the highlight of any job. When you start losing interest in that and find that you no longer care about the scandals in the office, the chances are that it is time for you to move on. Your attachment to the place and the people has faded.
Everybody does this from time to time, especially if you have a short attention span. However, if you find yourself doing it more often than you used to, you are probably bored. Maybe you are wistfully imagining yourself far away from this place, or maybe you are just thinking about what to have for dinner. Either way, you are not focusing on your work, which suggests that you are not interested in it.
Even the most routine-based people do not enjoy constant repetition, and it is even worse when it is your job. Doing the same tasks everyday becomes boring quickly, and your brain will slowly start to shut down. You will become distracted more easily and constantly be looking for ways to ignore the tasks at hand. If this is happening to you, look for a new job – or at least as your manager if you can get some more variation in your workload.
No matter what job you are employed to do, you should always want to provide the best service possible – whether that is for the good of others, to aid your employers, or even just for your own satisfaction. When that desire stops, however, it is probably time that you look for a new job. We all have off days at work, but if you find that your heart is no longer in it then it is time to leave.
Your workplace should not feel like a prison – but sometimes it does. You have so much energy but none of it is being channeled into your job. Instead, it feels as though your job is holding you down and stifling the drive you have for the other areas of your life. Maybe you love exercise, but your job is so exhausting you have no desire to workout after it. Perhaps you are a creative person, but all you want to do in your free time is sleep. This is a sign that you need a new job. You don’t want to lose your passions in life because your work is bringing you down.
Not everyone wants a super challenging job that requires them to be constantly putting out fires and saving the world. However, you also do not want something that is so simple and easy that you are constantly bored. You want work that you can put thought and energy into, and that allows you to think constructively. If it does not allow you those things, then it is time to go and find something that truly drives you to do your best.
This is probably the most clear sign. If you find yourself browsing job vacancy lists or dreaming about a better and more exciting workplace, then it might be time to look for something new. There is no point in staying in a job you hate. There is a big wide world out there and there are plenty more job opportunities for you. Take a look, send some applications, and see what happens. The world is your oyster.
