So, you’ve come here to put your friendship to the test?! If you have a true friend in your life, then all ten of these boxes below will be checked off, no questions asked! But if you find yourself pausing after reading some of the topics below, then maybe you should rethink your friendship. Life’s too short to surround yourself with fake friends! So read on to find out if your bestie has your back!
It’s a huge red flag if you find out your “best friend” has been talking trash behind your back. If this happens, just know that this shows you how much respect they have for you (NONE). You want a best friend that will be 100% honest with you, even when they have news they know you won’t like. And, if you find that you are having a problem with your bestie, just tell them the problem straight up, to their face. trust me, it’ll save both of you a lot of heartache!
No one is perfect and sometimes your best friend will make a mistake. The important thing is, can they say sorry?
If your best friend wrongs you, don’t immediately write them off! Instead, give them a chance to apologize, and if they do, hear them out! While there are some lines your bestie should never cross, it’s getting through the rough patches that will either make or break your friendship.
You might think being a good friend means agreeing with absolutely everything you say, but actually, that’s not true. Yes, your friend should support you, but they should also be able to tell you how it really is. You want their honesty for a wide range of topics; this can be as simple as should I wear this color eyeshadow, or as serious as discussing big life decisions. For example, maybe you just met your boyfriend (as in, a month ago) and the two of you already want to move in together, and you tell your bestie the news. Your friend should be able to say, “Hey, you just met! Take it slow,” and not worry about upsetting you.
Sometimes, your best friend needs to tell you what you don’t want to hear. That’s how you know they really care about you.
If you find out that your “best friend” has been flirting with you boyfriend, it’s time to put your foot down (oh, and don’t let your boyfriend off the hook so easily, too)! This is a line that should never be crossed, but it does happen. While it’s important for your SO to get along with your best friends, know when certain behavior falls under the “inappropriate” category. And speak up!
Your bestie isn’t about to let you walk out of the house with your shirt on backward or with food stuck in your teeth! They can be completely candid with you, and save you from a potential moment of utter embarrassment. As a side note, you should do the same for them! If you see a piece of lettuce wedged in between their pearly whites, don’t let them leave that restaurant without flossing first!
If your bestie really is a true friend, then they’ve got your back no matter what. Maybe your bestie mouthed someone off in your honor, or they drove the get-away car when no one else would. Or maybe when you found yourself at rock bottom, they were there for you, no questions asked. Your best friend is someone you can count on, through thick and thin!
At this point, if they’re really a true friend, you’re bestie is going to see you at your worst… That means on those crazy party nights, they’re right there with you on the bathroom floor, holding your hair back as you puke your guts out! Your best friend takes care of you and never leaves you stranded. No woman gets left behind!
This one can hurt if it happens. All those years in high school laughing, going to football games together, and checking your makeup in the bathroom are washed away as soon as college starts, and you’re left wondering, what did I do wrong? Does this sound familiar?
Well, I’m here to tell you that your bestie was never a true friend to begin with because long-distance or new beginnings shouldn’t end a solid friendship. Even in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, the two of you have used FaceTime and Houseparty to survive. Friends come and go, but best friends are forever!
When times are tough, we all need people we can count on. If you’re down in the dumps and just need to let out a good cry, hopefully, you’re bestie is there for you, to offer a shoulder to cry on. If they’re a true friend, you have no problem letting your guard down and being vulnerable in front of them.
Sometimes, you don’t even need words; you just want your best friend there.
Best said from the stripper in The Office, “Secrets, secrets, are no fun. Secrets, secrets, hurt someone.” A true friend doesn’t keep secrets from you, especially when they involve your friendship. If you find out your bestie has kept a secret for you, you should call them out on it! Likewise, you shouldn’t keep anything from them either. Rip that bandage off now, girl!
