A long-distance relationship. Sometimes if you really like a person, a long distance relationship is unavoidable. You can’t control where someone lives just because they’re an awesome person that makes your life joyful. But as people say, long-distance relationships can be pretty hard sometimes. Here are 5 way to survive one.
When you’re in a long distance relationship, communication is the key to making it work. We are lucky enough to live in an era where a long distance relationship is easier to succeed in. We do have the ability to text each other throughout the day. We can also call the person whenever we want because the call will go directly to their phone in their pocket rather than waiting for someone to be home to answer the landline.
You don’t need to be up in constant contact, blowing up each other’s phones with messages every five minutes. But making sure to make communication an important part of the relationship is sure to drive up the success rate.
Facetiming falls along the lines of communication in a long distance relationship, but it is also the next best thing to hanging out. Being able to visibly see the person you are dating is a good feeling and helps strengthen the bond between you two. Whether you set aside a time to have a video chatting date or you just leave each other on in the background while you do things, Facetiming makes you two feel closer to one another.
Being in a long distance relationship doesn’t mean you never have to see each other. It’s encouraged that you two make time and plans to see each other in person. That’s part of what dating is, spending time with one another. It’s not going to be easy, depending if you live a few hours of a car ride or plane ride away. But it’s important that you guys set aside that time to see each other.
Talk to each other and figure out what days or weekend works best, who is going to be doing the traveling, where they will be staying and how long they will be staying for. Spending time in person with each other is what helps any relationship grow.
Taking the time to visit each other in a long distance relationship is important, but it’s also important to make the most of the visits. Since their life is in a different area than yours, their visit is more like a mini vacation. So don’t just lie around the house doing nothing. Make a plan to go out on dates, movies, dinner, introduce them to your friends.
If there is a cool spot in your town that they are never going to see anywhere else, bring them to it! Enjoy each other’s company by making special memories. Now I’m not saying that laying at home watching Netflix is a horrible idea because it’s not. It’s just more beneficial if you guys go out and experience life together.
When it comes to dating, there is usually an end game for all of us, right? It doesn’t necessarily have to be marriage, but we’d like to have a life partner to experience the world together with. If you’re the type of person who just wants to date around for the fun of it, and not looking to be serious with anyone, then I don’t think to be in a long distance relationship is for you.
If you don’t find the person special enough to put in all the effort with then it’s best to just let them go because you’re wasting each others time. Chances are that you do find them special enough to go through the difficulty that comes with a long distance relationship. If that is the case, one of the goals here is to make it not be a long distance relationship anymore.
To grow with each other and partner up to take on life together, it’s better to do that by living with or near each other. Once you are sure that you are both on the same page with your futures, you need to figure out what steps to take together to bring each other closer in person. If you plan on moving in together, figure out how much money needs to be saved, what apartments to look at, who is moving where, and finding a job in the area.
Planning for the future surfies that you guys won’t have to be in a long distance relationship forever and that you guys will take the next step together in life, showing that you have survived the long distance.
