Fall is fast approaching, and that means the day when we have to hang up our sundresses for the last time for the year is coming. It’s totally possible, though, to wear them into fall! We’ve made a list for you of our 10 favorite ways to style a sundress in the fall.
You can instantly make a sundress more autumnal by throwing a sweater over it. The knit pulls it into the fall season and will keep warm on those days when the temperature’s hovering between summer and fall. This is a great way to style a sundress on a day when it’s warm outside and your school’s still blasting the air conditioning. That’s the magic of layers!

Throw this neutral sweater on over a sundress you already own, add some accessories (a long necklace would be so cute!), and you’re ready to head to class! Plus, if you get too warm you can totally tie this sweater around your waist.
This is a nice way to casually update your look for the fall, especially if you go for a darker wash instead of the light wash. This will add warmth to your outfit while also making your outfit look more autumnal. The sneakers dress down the look perfectly for class but this look would also be a great choice for a lunch date or a shopping trip with friends.

It can be hard to find the perfect denim jacket, but this one is a definite contender! The wash is perfect for a casual look, and the sleeves easily roll up.
Nothing says fall like a good pair of over-the-knee boots. Style a sundress you already own with your favorite over-the-knee boots and you’ve instantly got a great look for a fall party. Choose a pair without heel for a more daytime appropriate look, or dress down heeled boots with a more casual hair style and a flannel.

This pair is brown instead of black, but the color is really up you! You could also totally go for a taupe pair for something a little more unique!
If you get cold easily, this look is right up your alley. You can put the sweater on for that one class you have that always feels like the North Pole then tie it back around your waist for you walk between classes. Switch out the studded shoes for a pair of ankle booties for class, or rock your your fancier shoes for a more elevated look or to transition this outfit into night.
The easiest way to style a sundress for fall is to throw on a cardigan. To optimize this look, choose a sweater with a chunkier knit. With bare legs from the dress, you’ll probably still be fine to wear the cardigan as you walk from building to building. The chunkier the knit, the more autumnal your outfit will look (and the cosier you’ll be in your overly air conditioned class!).
This cardigan is neutral, so it’ll go with anything, and it looks so cozy and comfy! The tortoise shell buttons add some intrigue and we love the cable knit down the sides of the arms.
This trend really started coming back in the last year and a half or so, and we’re so here for it! Throwing a t shirt under a sundress dresses it down and keep you warmer. This is a great casual look for class. If you want to style it a little edgier, try pairing it with your favorite pair of combat boots. If you’re trying to hit the nineties fashion trend, this is a look you absolutely have to try this fall!
Leather jackets scream fall, so it would make sense to style a sundress under one. This is a great look to wear to a party or out on a dinner date. A cute pair of heels could elevate this look if you’re planning to take it out on the town, but your favorite pair of flats would be perfect for class. If you’re going to any concerts this fall you might want to give this look a try. You’ll look effortlessly cool and you’ll be super comfortable!

Ah, the flannel. The go-to shirt in the fall for guys and girls alike. Throwing your fave flannel on over a sundress instantly makes it feels more autumnal and dresses it down. The knee socks in this reference photo are a great edition, but you could totally swap them for tights or go without depending on the weather. If you wanted to, you could totally tie it up to accentuate your waist.

For a more pulled together look, try throwing on a blazer and pair of boots. What really ties this particular outfit together is the statement necklace, but if that’s not for you you could always try a cute belt or scarf! This would be a great look to wear to work or an interview, or if you have an event to go to during the day that’s going to be a little fancier.

Speaking of scarves, even just throwing on a scarf can easily make your sundress more autumnal, especially if you choose a jewel tone or a neutral color. Again: the chunkier the knit, the more autumnal the look will be. Plus, a thicker scarf can keep you warm if you walk into a classroom and it turns out it’s really cold (we’ve all been there!). Ankle boots or even a pair of riding boots would complete this outfit.
