10 Ways To Maximize Storage In A Small Bedroom

We can’t all have master bedrooms, but having a bedroom on the smaller side doesn’t have to be the end of the world. When it comes to small bedrooms storage is a primary concern. Typically, this means the style of the room often takes a backseat to functionality. Can’t a girl have both? It may be possible with these ten ways to get the most storage you can out of what little space you have!

1. Underbed Storage

Utilizing the space your bed takes up is rule #1 when maximizing storage space in a room. In a small bedroom, the bed can easily overtake the space and claim a large portion of the room. Using the underside of the bed for storage is smart because it means all that space the bed takes up isn’t being wasted on just the bed alone.

Using a bed frame that lifts your bed at least a foot off the ground is a great way to gain access to the ample storage underneath it. If you prefer to have your bed closer to ground level, trundle beds are a great option because they provide organized drawer space built right into the bedframe!

2. Use The Back Of Doors

Hanging shelves on the back of doors is a really great way to add some storage space to a small bedroom!. By hanging shelves off the door, you’re not losing any space in the room which leaves you with more options for decorating your small space with furniture and decor.

You can fill the shelves with a variety of items or accessories depending on the shelving unit you hang, or you could always go the classic route and hang a laundry bag on the back of the door. Have a closet with a door? Hang on there too for even more storage!

3. Multipurpose Furniture

Making your furniture work double-time for you is another really smart move for anyone trying to get the most storage out of their small room. It takes a little creativity, but there are ways that certain pieces of furniture can serve multiple purposes in a room.

You could have a dresser next to your bed that also serves as a nightstand, an ottoman that offers storage inside, or a dropleaf table that doubles as a desk you can fold up when not in use! Finding ways to use furniture in multiple ways means you can have less in the room without sacrificing storage opportunities.

4. Use A Headboard With Storage Space

While not everyone has a headboard for their bed, they can be great decorative pieces that add a lot to a room – storage included! If you’re going to have a headboard you may as well make it functional as well as stylish. There are many headboards out there that have built-in nooks-and-crannies for things like books or potted plants or candles or whatever needs a place to call home in your small bedroom!

5. Ladder Shelves

Ladder shelves are a super cute way to get extra shelving if you don’t want to hang shelves on the walls! Most typically have at least 4 shelves on them, offering extra spaces to display photos or decor. These shelves are eye-catching and make a statement, and they also draw the eye upwards which helps to make a room feel larger than it is!

6. Hang Your Shoes

Do you have more shoes than you know what to do with? Do you find your shoes in all corners of your room? Hanging your shoes is a very smart way to get some extra space in your small bedroom. Not only does hanging shoes give each pair a designated spot off the ground, but it leaves more horizontal space in the room or closet which helps to make the room feel bigger, especially when it isn’t very big in the first place.

7. Corner Shelves

Placing some corners shelves in any room is a great way to use that space where not much else can fit, but it works especially well in a small bedroom where space is already so limited. Having shelves in the corner of the room doesn’t take up too much of the space overall because the space in the corner typically wouldn’t be getting much use otherwise.

Plus, you get some extra shelves out of it! Who doesn’t love more shelving storage? With 4 corners to a room, these shelves offer a ton of extra place to keep things.

8. Use A Garment Rack

Garment racks are really trendy and a great way to display some of your favorite clothing pieces. If your small bedroom is so small it doesn’t have a closet (unthinkable, I know) or the closet is just too small to hold all your things, using a garment rack can give you a little bit of extra space for your clothes. Make the most of it by getting a rack with storage along the bottom for shoes or accessories!

9. Hang Your Lights

If your small bedroom needs some additional lighting, I would suggest hanging lights from the ceiling or walls rather than using table lamps or floor lamps. When your bedroom is small, every inch of space matters when it comes to storage.

Using lamps that don’t take up any space on a table or on the floor leaves more options for decorating the room and utilizing the space to its full potential! If you don’t want to invest in hanging lights, stringing up some twinkle lights is a great alternative for getting some extra lighting in your room.

10. Rethink Your Desk

Having a desk or a table in your bedroom may seem like a no brainer and like an absolute necessity for a lot of people. Unfortunately, having a small bedroom to work with can make having a desk space difficult or just plain impossible. In those cases, it’s a good idea to rethink your desk.

A desk doesn’t have to be large to be functional! Try repurposing a shelf into a desk by mounting it lower on the wall and adding a chair or stool. Another good point about desks is that they don’t have to be wide! Try going for a more vertical and tall desk with shelves to make it feel bigger.

If your small bedroom is feeling cramped or dysfunctional, try these space-saving ideas to help add more storage while bringing some style and creativity into your room. How do you make the most of your small bedroom? Let us know in the comments!
