10 Ways To Look Professional And Stay Comfortable

Looking professional for work is not always the most comfortable experience, and there’s nothing worse than sitting at your desk all day feeling restricted and miserable. Thankfully, we have ten ways to look professional and stay comfortable at work!

1. Skinny Black Trousers

Black polyester trousers are a workplace staple whether you in an office, supermarket, or anywhere with a uniform. These can often be shapeless, uncomfortable, and unflattering. However, stores have clocked onto this and have started to sell skinny black trousers with softer and more elasticated material! These trousers offer a much more comfortable fit and look much more attractive! You’ll feel as though you are wearing leggings whilst still maintaining that professional work look.

2. Tops Not Blouses Or Shirts

Traditionally, women wear blouses to work – assuming your workplace does not supply you with uniform shirts. Sadly, blouses and shirts can often leave you feeling as though you are wearing cardboard – and don’t forget those awful buttons that leave a big gaping hole in the chest area! Instead of button-up shirts, look for black and white t-shirts and tops. These will still fit the workplace and the monochrome look will mean you blend in. Nobody will even notice it is not a blouse, they will just see how classy you appear.

3. Gardening Shoes

This may sound ridiculous, but hear out the idea. One of the biggest challenges for any working woman is finding a pair of suitable shoes that will look good in the workplace but also not leave you with crippled feet. Try gardening shoes! These shoes are specifically designed to be comfortable since the makers are imagining you spending the day standing in the garden. They usually come in plain black designs and look very professional when paired with your work clothes. You can usually find them online or at any local garden centre. Best part is that they are designed to resist the stress of gardening so they should last a long time even when being worn to work each day.

4. Warm Cardigans

Cardigans are a great way to stay warm and look professional in the work place. There are so many different styles of cardigan, so buy a range to suit the various seasons of the year. One great bonus about cardigans is that they can be used to cover up a top that maybe is not as suitable for the workplace, like a tank top or sleeveless shirt. Nobody will know if they cannot see your arms. A great way to pick up a range of cardigans for a bargain price is by visiting your local charity shop. Chances are there will have been a number donated in all different styles, so have a browse and find some that suit you.

5. Thin Leggings Under A Dress

Leggings are almost always a workplace no-no – however, tights are always acceptable. So if you buy a pair of thin, plain black leggings and wear them under a dress, no-one will question it. All they will see is your dark legs and they will assume you are wearing thick tights. You will still look professional but you will avoid all the issues that come with wearing tights, such as laddering, sweating, and fighting to get back out of them.

6. Long Or Wrap Skirts

During the warm summer months, the idea of wearing trousers to work can be a nightmare. That said, not all of us feel comfortable wearing short skirts to work either. One solution is to wear floor length skirts or wrap skirts. This should mean that you do not need to cover your legs which will keep you cool in the workplace. The flowing nature of the skirts will be much more comfortable and allow you to move your legs more freely. You will also look fashion forward and stylish at your work each day!

7. Blazers

When you have an important meeting, conference, or event that you need to attend, you often feel like you have to be suited and booted. This is not always the most comfortable situation, though, and nobody can concentrate when they feel uncomfortable. Instead of a heavy, restrictive suit jacket, you could try a smart blazer. They are lighter and will allow you to look professional but still feel relaxed and fashionable. They will likely fit better too.

8. Wool Jumpers

Most workplaces encourage Christmas jumpers during the festive season, but wool sweaters can be worn all year round if you find the right ones. A lighter jumper with a splash of colour is the perfect accessory for the summer months, whilst a thick pattered jumper will keep you feeling toasty during the winter. If you pair your jumper with a pair of smart trousers and some shiny black shoes, everyone will think you are the picture of professionalism.

9. Skorts

You probably have not even thought of the word skort since you were in the Girl Guides, but they are perfect for the workplace! A skort will give you the professional style of a skirt but without that horrible chafing. You will have all the comfort of shorts and the fashion of a skirt. It will also negate that worry that every woman has about moving her legs when in a meeting or attempting to walk up the stairs.

10. Summer Dresses

When people think of workplace dresses, they often imagine something plain and form-fitting like when you see women wearing on The Apprentice or Dragon’s Den. However, a low-key summer dress can be perfect for work. As long as it is nothing too garish or tye-dyed, a summer dress can allow you freedom of movement and a way of staying cool on a warm day. Customise it with a chunky belt to make it look more like traditional workplace attire.
