Drinking is all fun and games until the next day when you wake up with a hangover. You instantly regret everything you drank the night before. The only true way to avoid a hangover s to not drink, but if you have a hangover, that ship has long sailed. Here are a few ways to rid of a hangover. Everyone’s body is different, so what may work for you may not work for your friend and vis versa.
I love food so if eating is a way to get rid of a hangover this is something that I would definitely try, if ever in the situation. Since drinking lowers your blood sugar eating some carbs will bring it up. I like to think that the carbs “soak up” the alcohol, though there haven’t been any proven studies to back this up. The alcohol is already in your liver breaking down so the food won’t be too helpful. Try to stay away from greasy or fried foods as this will cause you heartburn and other negative symptoms on top of your hangover. Eating breakfast will help with your recovery because your breakfast will give your body vitamins, nutrients, and protein.
What a perfect excuse to sleep in. Getting plenty of sleep will restore your circadian rhythm and help the way your brain functions. The lack of sleep doesn’t make your hangover worse but can cause fatigue and a headache. Getting more sleep can lessen the negative effects of your hangover. Sleep will allow your body to recover from the drinking that occurred the night before. Sleep for as long as you can. You will go to sleep feeling like trash but wake up feeling a lot better.
Being dehydrated can cause headaches and make your hangover even worse. Worse! A hangover is a terrible feeling and to know that it can get worse is just a living nightmare. Alcohol makes you urinate more by increasing the amount of urine that your kidneys produce. Urinating too often will have fluids leave your body that would need to be restored so that you can start feeling better. Water will help hydrate your body and you should drink it for a few hours once you realize you have a hungover. But don’t overdo it with the water, you will end up making yourself sick and can lead to vomiting, gross. Losing fluids is the complete opposite of what you should be doing during your healing process. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The amount of water you drink should equal the amount of water you have lost.
Ginger has been proven to ease an upset stomach. Combine ginger, brown sugar, in a ½ cup of orange juice. This has been shown to lessen the effects of hangover symptoms.
This is also called taking the hair of the dog or hair of the dog that bit you. This is a concoction made up of lemon juice, gin, and hot sauce. This tip is for those that have a strong stomach and gag reflexes. They say drinking more can help because some hangovers are caused by alcohol withdrawals. Though this is not highly recommended because this can lead to unhealthy habits and a dependence on alcohol. This is a hangover fix that is said to be short-termed and may prolong your recovery. Once you stop drinking the symptoms will return.
This will be your best friend. Studies show that taking this before, during, and after drinking will reduce hangover effects. Vitamin B6 will give you a boost of energy and help aid your brain function. Energy is something that you would want to have since hangovers will make you sluggish.
A cold shower will make your body feel refreshed and will wake up your other senses.
There are 2 reasons to drink fluids. When you drink a lot of fluids it will make you urinate more frequently which will get the alcohol out of your system. You may become dehydrated and that will cause you even more issues in addition to your hangover. Hangovers can also cause your electrolytes to get out of balance. Gatorade and Pedialyte will give you the fluids you are lacking and also replenish your electrolytes. Pedialyte has more electrolytes than Gatorade but each is very effective.
Orange juice is my first thought when I think about Vitamin C. Eating an orange will hydrate you as well as give your body the nutrients it is now lacking. Vitamin C is used to strengthen your immune system.
Aspirin and ibuprofen (anti-inflammatories) would be the pills you would want to take as a way to get rid of a hangover. They will help with the pain and nausea associated with your hangover. Tylenol contains acetaminophen, and this will increase the negative effects that it has on your liver. Both alcohol and acetaminophen filter through your liver and taking both together or in the same time frame as each other can lead to liver damage. When taking medication don’t exceed the amount that is recommended because you can upset your stomach. No pain reliever may be better than a pain reliever. Aspirin and ibuprofen would provide you relief at that moment but in the long run, will harm your body. Long term usage of aspirin and ibuprofen can lead to your stomach lining becoming irritated or even stomach ulcers.
Having a hangover will make you feel terrible, physically as well as mentally. Being able to get rid of a hangover quick so that you can go back enjoying your life.
