The time has arrived! You’re graduating from college, and you’re also getting ready to go out into the professional world and adult. But, as they say, clothes make the man. You need to know what the wardrobe essentials for professional men are. Here are ten of them.
Right off the bat, we’re going to talk about one the most important wardrobe essentials for professional men: the suit. When you go into a job interview, you need a suit, or you won’t even be considered for a follow-up interview. When you take a lady out on a very nice date, where a suit, or you’ll never get a next date. Attending a formal function? That’s right, you need a suit. Some are tailored, some are store-bought; it doesn’t matter how you get one, just make sure it’s a dark color, as that’s the most suitable one. Also, the suit is considered your greatest ‘weapon’ in your wardrobe. This is the thing you break out for ’emergencies.’

For years, I had this wallet with a Hawaiian theme on it. Throughout junior high and high school, I always had it with me. Then college came around, and I had to get a regular brown one. Some people take your image very seriously, and it doesn’t take much to turn them off. Have a DC Comics themed wallet? That might as well be a sign that says ‘Don’t take me seriously’ hanging around your neck. If you take your money seriously, people will take you seriously. This is definitely one of the wardrobe essentials for professional men.
There are three types of dress slacks out there: navy, brown, and khaki. It’s important to have, at the very least, three of each color, so that you can wear them to the workplace and other important social functions every day of the week. While on casual Fridays you can possibly wear jeans to work, but for the rest of the work week, dress slacks are a wardrobe essential for professional men. They may not be as important as a suit, but they rank in the top 5, easily.

Like the wallet, a nice watch is helpful in conveying a good image to your boss, your coworkers and other professional ‘adults.’ While the argument can be made that you can just look up the time on your phone, a good watch has always been a classic accessory. Having the right watch can make you look both classic and sophisticated.

What can be second part of the ‘Workplace Outfit,’ the blazer is a big help in trying to look appropriate for the workplace. Add this to the previously mentioned dress slacks and a white dress shirt, and you’ve the day-to-day work outfit down. You may think that all you need is the dress slacks and a white button down, and yeah, that’ll just barely pass the threshold of a work outfit. But add the blazer, and you can attain the ‘comfortable but classy’ look.

A tie is another one of the basic wardrobe essentials for professional men. Really, this item is an obvious one. If you walk into an interview without a tie, unless it’s in the entertainment, you’ve already lost the interview. A good tie, in a solid, dark color, fits naturally in the work place.

Most guys don’t pay attention to their shoes. They really should. Like the suit, a pair of nice, black shoes goes far in your interview. If the person who’s interviewing you sees that you don’t care about the shoes you’re wearing, they’ll think that you don’t care about your appearance, or that you’re careless enough to let something like that slip through the cracks. Image matters a lot in certain jobs. If you jeopardize that in any way, the boss will show you the front door like that.

Black shoes, you wear to interviews; casual shoes, you wear to the office. And while you may be able to get away with more ‘regular’ shoes, you still need to be aware if they give of the ‘professional worker’ look. Tennis’s are great you spend your time running around the office and doing work outside, but behind a desk? Yeah, you need ‘nice’ shoes. And sandals? Hard. NO.

Like the tie, a nice, black belt is an item that really helps a man’s wardrobe, especially when he shows up to work and to interviews. Can you imagine hiring someone who shows up to an interview, and he’s not wearing a belt? Like I mentioned with the wallet, it’s like a big warning sign. It may not be serious to you, but like with every item on this, it’s being critically observed by everyone.

Yes, that’s right, you have to pay attention to your socks to. It seems like you have to pay attention to everything you wear, and as a matter of fact, you do. You have to wear socks that match the shoes you wear. Black with black, brown with brown, and so on and so on. It’s like showing how good you are with styling and color coordination. If you don’t have that concept down, it serves as a deterrent to others.
