10 Underrated Movies On Netflix

Netflix has hundreds of underrated movies available through its streaming service, but there are people out there who stick to watching the same episodes of friends over and over. If you are willing to expand your horizons a little, check out these 10 underrated movies on Netflix.

1. About A Boy

About a Boy stars Hugh Grant as a rich bachelor from London who is on an irresponsible and untruthful search for women. He begins attending single parent meetings and meets a boy named Marcus who ultimately becomes a friend and the reason Hugh Grant’s character, Will, grows up. This film was released in 2002 and was universally praised, but ultimately forgotten about. Netflix’s younger viewers have not found this one yet, but should definitely give it a watch.

2. American Honey

American Honey is a newer movie, released in 2006 and starring heartthrob Shia LeBeouf. He and a band of misfits, including a runaway teen, travel across the Midwest and get caught up in hard partying and law-bending activities. This movie is considered one of the most underrated movies, and the best movie you probably haven’t seen on Netflix but really deserves a look.

3. Brother’s Keeper

This film is Joe Berlinger’s, the director of the new Ted Bundy documentary and movie, first film from 1992. This is a classic for real crime lovers and features the Ward brothers and the death of one that occurred in the small village of Munnsville, New York. One of the other brothers was accused and taken to trial for his murder, but I’ll let you watch the movie to figure out if he was acquitted or not.

4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

This movie is a martial arts epic that was extremely popular when it was first released in 2000, earning ten Academy Award nominations. If you’re into foreign films, this is a classic that was based on a Chinese novel and considered a multinational venture. While popular in its origins, most Netflix users have forgotten about it by now so it’s time to give it another watch.

5. Ex Machina

While Ex Machina is pretty popular, it is also a movie that gets better every time you see it. It is one that although newer, already seems like a classic film. This movie shows an examination of artificial intelligence, human nature, and the idea that men seek to control the things they create. When you can’t decide on a movie you’ve never seen, give Ex Machina another watch.

6. Silver Linings Playbook

The idea of mental illness is presented questionably in the film, but it features an extremely likable class in Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. The main character, played by Cooper, is released from a psychiatric hospital that he was held in to treat bipolar disorder. He vows to win back his wife but instead meets a recent widow, portrayed by Lawrence. This film was a huge hit at the box office and is still a great movie to watch on Netflix.

7. The Terminator

The Terminator is only considered underrated because it is considered a classic 80s movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a cyborg assassin that is sent from the future, 2029 to be exact. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you really need to catch up, and if you have, you’d be surprised just how great it still is.

8. The Truman Show

While a lot of people have seen the Truman Show, it definitely does not get enough credit for the cinematic phenomenon it is. Jim Carrey took on a more serious role for this one and a lot of viewers skip over it because of this. In reality, this is one of the best films of the 90s and has moments of hilarity, sadness, and touching times.

9. High Flying Bird

High Flying Bird is an absolute must-see movie. The film itself takes place over just 48 hours and is a thrilling drama based on the world of sports. The majority of the movie is scenes of people talking in rooms but the writing and acting are phenomenal. This is a great movie for those looking for something exciting and refreshing on Netflix.

10. Swiss Army Man

Arguably one of the strangest movies out there, Swiss Army Man is perfect for those with a certain sense of humor and is one of the most underrated movies. A man has been lost on an island contemplates suicide when a corpse washes up. He develops a friendship with that corpse when he realizes he is able to manipulate it. While this fil is “disarmingly odd,” it is a film you must give a watch at least once.
