What is Netflix and chill? Well, according to Urban Dictionary, it means, “that you are going to go over to your partners house and f**k with Netflix in the background.” While some might associate the term with watching Netflix with a friend, most of society (particularly in the college sphere) has definitely taken the meaning to a whole new level. So in case you need a little help navigating your way through a Netflix and chill session, here is everything you need to know.
First you need to put out the feelers. I wouldn’t recommend straight out asking someone if they want to Netflix and chill…unless, of course, you guys have been hooking up for a while and the question is more in a joking manner (because, well, the answer is pretty obvious). Instead, just see if they’d be interesting in coming over to your dorm room to hang out and maybe watch a movie. Once they arrive…you can then determine if the “and chill” part is meant to happen.
Get the bed all comfy, turn off the lights (maybe keep a desk lamp on – you don’t want to be creepy), and get the laptop ready for some good ole Netflix time.
Find a show or movie that neither of you are truly interested in. If you’re both huge Star Wars fans and you choose Episode VI, chances are, you’ll be too absorbed in the film to notice each other. Also, make sure you don’t pick something completely ridiculous that might dampen the mood mid-hookup (ie. the bathroom scene from Dumb and Dumber).
The movie has started, you guys have gotten comfortable. Now’s time to make the move. My advice? Just go for it. Go in for a kiss and see where it takes you. You should know immediately if the other person is interested or not. If not – see #5.
Make sure your partner is wholeheartedly into the “chill” section of “Netflix and chill.” If it feels like they’re not into it, don’t continue. Remember, if it’s not an enthusiastic “yes,” it’s an absolute no. Even if you’re in the middle of the “do” and they say “stop,” no matter how frustrated you get, stop, and let them know that it’s okay.
Whether this Netflix and chill session leads to a one night stand, a friend with benefits routine, or a full blown relationship, you must respect the other person. This goes for any type of hookup! Respect the person enough to not go shouting to the world that you just “Netflix and chilled with so-and-so.” As humorous as the phrase may be, you should still respect the other person’s privacy.
Because when it comes down to it, that’s what Netflix and chill is for!
