With yearly festivals dedicated to Big Red soda and Barbacoa (a Sunday morning delicacy), an almost daily light show on one of the oldest Cathedrals in the United States, and an eclectic music scene, there is always something to do on any given day. The River Walk
A must-see if you’re downtown. The river runs through the heart of downtown San Antonio. Nestled between historic bridges and pathways, the River Walk is home to restaurants, hotels, shopping, and the best night life atmosphere with bars and eateries scattered throughout the pathway. You can even go on a river barge tour. And if you’re lucky, you may hear a free concert by local musicians along the ride.
Museums
San Antonio is home to one of the largest collections of Latin American Art in the United States. This elaborate collection beginning with the Olmecs, Aztecs, and going all the way through colonial history to Modern Culture can be found at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The museum also houses a collection of Asian, Contemporary, European, and Islamic art. But if traditional museums are not your thing, then the Witte Museum is for you. A mix of science and culture, the Witte has combinations of artwork and relics. Where else can you go to see a life-sized stuffed wild buffalo, gorgeous couture gowns worn by Fiesta Royalty…and dinosaurs?!
The Rodeo
The Rodeo rides into San Antonio in February and stays for 21 days. You can experience what it was like to chow-down like cowboys and ranch hands at the traditional Cowboy Breakfast. Cowboy Breakfast kicks off the Rodeo and is the largest event. Come early and get a breakfast taco and two-step the morning away with live bands.
Fiesta
Ok, you can’t not talk about San Antonio and not talk about Fiesta. The two go together like chips and queso…lol. Fiesta is a two week long party in April throughout the city. It consists of live music, people in fiesta costumes, eating just about every meal on a stick, confetti in your hair for days, parades with amazing high schools bands and floats decked out in flowers and lights. And a carnival…basically crazy cool fun in the streets. People from all over plan their vacation around our Fiesta. There are over 300 events going on in a 2 week period. There is something for everyone!
Market Square
Known as the largest Mexican Market in the United States, the Market Square (also called ‘el mercado’) is a three-block outdoor plaza lined with restaurants, shops and produce stands located downtown. Infused with bright colors and colonial architecture, the Market Square is home to 3 restaurants including the famous “Mi Tierra” (which is open 24 hours), 80 shops selling ware from Mexico and those of local San Antonio artists, and it hosts events throughout the plaza all year. You can find live bands and dance shows throughout the summer.
John T. Floores Country Store
If live music is more your scene then you need to head north to the Hill Country to John T Floores Country Store. It’s known for its world famous tamales and homemade bread! Floores offers a full menu of great “Texas Cafe” style food, ice cold beer and truly unique “Texccentric” atmosphere. With one of the biggest dance halls in Texas, you can hear live music from upcoming locals to famous Texas legends like Willy Nelson, Dwight Yoakum, and out-of-towners like Aaron Lewis, etc. Boot-scoot the night away!
