Why It’s Okay To Be Hairy Down Below

With puberty comes pubic hair and with pubic hair comes opinions. To shave or not to shave that is the question? With so many beauty trends for down below, from the bikini or Brazilian wax, to the ‘Vajazzle’ (I have no idea why women want to stick gemstones around their genitalia either) – the lady garden has become a place to be sculpted and tamed. But why not let there be a bush? There is a lot of pressure put on women by society and also by their partners to be clean shaven down below but the purpose of this article is to reassure women that it’s okay to be hairy down below. So without further ado, here’s why:

1.It is a sign that you are a woman.

Personally, I find the idea of being totally clean shaven below horribly infantilising. Only little girls who have not undergone puberty are completely hairless, therefore I view a bit of fuzz down below as a symbol of womanhood and femininity. Why would we want to make ourselves look like little girls? We are women and it is our right to be hairy if we want. Of course if you want to be completely bare then I am not one to judge- each to their own!

2.It’s healthy

Pubic hair has been compared to eyelashes and eyebrows- fair enough it isn’t as fine or delicate, but like both of these, pubic hair helps keep unwanted dirt and bacteria from entering the body. In this way, pubic hair acts as a barrier to infections such as yeast infections. Therefore, pubic hair actually protects your vagina – you wouldn’t shave your eyelashes or your eyebrows off would you? So why feel the need to shave off your hair down below? It is perfectly normal and natural to have a little something there. A perfect reason why you shouldn’t be ashamed of being hairy down below.

3.It reduces friction during sex

During intercourse, yours and your partner’s private parts naturally come into contact with one another. Pubic hair acts as a barrier between this skin, which is extremely sensitive, and minimises friction and accompanying rashes and inflammation. Also, if you do shave off all of your hair, when it starts to grow back all stubbly (men think of a half moon but on the vagina) this can also hurt and dig into your partner. And don’t even get me started on ingrown hairs ladies…

4.It reduces the risks of STIs

If you are hairy down below, pubic hair will physically block the transmission of infections and shaving or hair removal procedures, which can lead to tiny open cuts in the skin, actually makes sexually transmitted infections easier to transmit. So keep a little patch of hair to avoid such risks.

5.It’s your body

Pubic hair offers women the chance to have some control. As mentioned in the intro, many women face pressure from society and their partners to shave down below or to keep it nice and tidy. But why should we listen? It is our body and therefore only we have the right to decide what to do with the hair in our lady gardens.

6.It can be fun (& sexy)

The beauty (also the curse of pubic hair) is that even if you shave or wax it, it still comes back with a vengeance. This means that you can have a bit of fun down below, this could involve shaving or trimming shapes such as a heart or an arrow (if you’re feeling cheeky), or even your partner’s initials to spice things up in the bedroom. Growing it long also means your partner has a little something to play with and hold onto… Or even if you don’t have a partner, why not style your pubic hair to represent your personality, create a funky pattern or even dye your pubic hair – who cares as long as you are happy?

7.It makes you extra sensitive

By banishing being hairy down below, you are actually shooting yourself in the foot metaphorically speaking… Nerve endings can be found at the end of ALL hair follicles no matter where the hair is on your body. Therefore, removing all pubic hair down below means you are reducing your vagina’s maximum potential for sensation- this means masturbation and sexual intercourse is less likely to be as fun…

8.It helps you sweat less

Females always worry about smelling down below and are extremely self-conscious about sweating, hence the rise of beauty products to help women remain fresh down there. But pubic hair is in fact the most natural way for women to stay dry and helps to avoid the embarrassment of a sweaty vagina. Pubic hair also helps to regulate body temperature, which is a necessity, especially as the groin tends to hold onto warmth more than the rest of the body!

So there you have it, a list of reasons why it is okay to be hairy down below. If you can think of any other reasons, then write them in the comment section that follows this article.
