5 Ways To Protect Your Hair From The Sun This Summer

Over the summer, we often go to great lengths to protect our skin from the glaring sun, to prevent it from burning and aging. As important as this is, we often overlook the importance of protecting our hair from the sun!  Just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also damage your hair – drying it out and leaving it limp and frail. You can use various products and methods to protect your hair from the sun, many of which also have the added benefit of protecting your hair from other elements such as salty sea water and gritty sand, while adding shine and strengthening your strands. To get you started on your hair’s sun protection journey, here are 5 ways to protect your hair from the sun this summer!

1) Heat Protection Spray

Heat protection spray is your best friend when you’re going out into the sun and want to protect your hair. There are many options ranging from expensive salon brands to cheaper drugstore brands. One of my favourites is Tresemme Care and Protect Heat Defence Spray – it is well priced and extremely effective – protecting your hair from heat up to 230◦C, and providing a long-lasting smooth finish, volume, body, and bounce. An additional plus side to this product is the amazing smell!

2) Sun Hat

A sun hat is a fashionable and functional accessory, that reduces the need to apply lots of heat protection product to your hair, which can build up and make it sticky. Not only will a sun hat protect your hair from the sun, but it will also protect your eyes, skin, and head so you’ll be better protected from eye damage, sunburn and heat stroke too! If you’re looking for the perfect sun hat, Monsoon and Accessorize are good places to start your search.

3) Oil

oils can be very beneficial in helping to protect your luscious locks from the sun. Dry oils, in particular, are great if you want a serum type product, that will not make your hair look too greasy or feeling sticky. You can use branded dry hair oils such as Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, or you can use food grade oils which you can use individually or mix together. For thick hair, you can use thicker oils such as olive oil, avocado oil or coconut oil, while thinner hair types will benefit from thinner oils such as jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and kukui oil. Apply your chosen oil to the hair and leave it in while you’re out in the sun or apply and wash it out prior to going out.

4) Use a Moisture Rich Conditioner

The heat of the sun tends to have a drying effect on the hair, so it is important to use a moisturising conditioner to combat this issue. Shea moisture offers a range of affordable and deeply moisturising natural oil-based conditioning products. If you want to go the extra mile to protect your hair, use a deep conditioning treatment before and after your hair is exposed to the sun, for best results.

5) Avoid the Midday Sun

Finally, the easiest and most effective way to protect your hair from sun damage is avoiding too much sun! The midday sun is particularly hot and glaring, and exposure to it can lead to heat damage to your hair. Therefore, minimising your exposure to the sun can help to minimise the risk of retaining heat damage to your hair. Simple!

Are you planning to brave the heat of the sun on your hair this summer? If you are, be sure to take these simple steps to protect your hair and minimise damage to your precious locks!
