8 Ways To Make Your Dorm Room More Zen

Your dorm room at university should be your sanctuary; somewhere you can relax, unwind and take a well deserved break from the daily stresses of studying and university life. Follow our tips below to transform your dorm room into the ultimate zen den.

1. Donate or sell anything you don’t use

Before starting to revamp your dorm room, it’s important to declutter by getting rid of the things that you don’t use anymore or are taking up unnecessary space. Clothing, shoes and furnishings that you no longer need or use can be donated to charity shops or if you’re in need of some extra cash, sell them on apps such as Depop or eBay.

2. Find new ways to store things

There’s nothing zen about having cables and wires, blankets and dirty clothes strewn across your bedroom floor. Finding new ways to organise items is so easy and can be as simple as buying a few storage baskets to ensure your floor space is maximised and never cluttered.

3. Light scented candles

Lighting scented candles can be both a great way to unwind and keep your dorm room smelling fresh at the same time. There are so many relaxing scents to choose from. Opt for something classic like lavender or vanilla, or if you prefer a more earthy scent, choose pine, or for a fruity scent, opt for a citrus smelling candle.

4. Invest in a salt lamp

Whether you choose to place one on your desk or next to your bed, Himalayan salt lamps make not only beautiful dorm room decorations, but have numerous health benefits too. They will clean the air in your room and their gentle, warm glow will soothe anxiety and stress, helping you to sleep.

5. Keep your bedding colours neutral

Natural, earthy tones promote feelings of calmness and will make your dorm room look less noisy. Soft pink, green, tan, beige or white bedding will keep your room looking and feeling fresh, while pulling the whole room together, making for a complete look. White bedding works fantastically and soft furnishings like cushions and blankets in earthy tones can add a gentle pop of colour.

6. Become a plant parent

Plants are an easy way to add character to your dorm room, without needing to go overboard on decorations. If you’re bad at keeping plants alive, an air purifying plant such as aloe vera would be an ideal choice. They are almost un-killable and don’t need to be watered frequently, making them the perfect addition to a student’s room.

7. Place healing crystals around your room

Placing crystals around your dorm room or next to your bed can help to purify the energy in the room and ensure you get a better nights sleep.

Black Tourmaline is a great crystal to keep in your room. While you sleep this crystal aids with protection and neutralises negative energy.

Rose Quartz softens energy, aiding you with relaxation and sleep, and can help to prevent nightmares.

8. Keep your room clean and tidy

After decluttering and revamping your dorm room, it’s important to maintain the zen den that you’ve worked hard to create. Make regular effort to declutter and either donate or sell items that no longer serve a purpose for you, and ensure that everything you keep in your room always has its own place.

Even though it may not be the most exciting chore in the world, it’s also important to keep your room clean so regularly dusting, wiping down hard surfaces and vacuuming the floor are essential to maintaining a zen dorm room.
