8 Ways To Get Natural Looking, Sunkissed Hair

You want to know how to lighten your hair? If you prefer natural ways over bleaches and salons, here’s 8 ways to get natural looking, sunkissed hair for the perfect summer look.

1. Sun

Sun exposure is the most natural way to get natural sunkissed hair. The sun affects the colour of your hair by decreasing its melanin, making it appears lighter. Beware, the rays of the sun can be very damaging for your hair!


2. Salt Water

Salt water can also lighten your locks. If you can go to the beach but still want that surfer look, you can create you own salt water. Take 3 teaspoons of salt and mix with 2 cups of water. After you shampoo and condition your hair, pour the mixture in your hair and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly afterwards as salt can damage your hair.

3. Lemon

Lemon is the most widely used natural hair lightener. It lightens dark blond and light brown hair without leaving reddish tones. Take the juice of 3 lemon and mix some water with it put it into a spray and apply the mixture to the areas you want to highlight. Let your hair dry in the sun. If you use this method often, you’ll need to follow up with a conditioner or add a tablespoon of sweet almond oil to your spray bottle as the acidity present in lemons can cause your hair to dry out. It might take a week or 2 of daily use for your hair to lighten.

4. Rhubarb

Rhubarb cab also be used as a way to get natural, sunkissed hair. Let simmer 1/4 of rhubarb in 2 cups of water for about an hour. Strain the water and rinse your hair with this rhubarb water after you shampoo and you condition your hair. You should start noticing a difference after a couple of rinses.

5. Cinnamon

Cinnamon will provide a subtle and natural colour. It has antioxidants and act as a natural sunscreen to protect your hair from sun damages. Mix 3-4 tablespoons with enough conditioner to form a paste and apply on your strands. Wrap a shower cap around your head and leave the mixture for at least 6 hours or overnight. Rinse off. Repeat this method as often as you like since it will not damage your hair follicles.

6. Camomile tea

Chamomile is one of the gentlest essential oils so you can use this method without fear of damaging your scalp. It’s very efficient to lighten the darkest hair colours. Fill a mug with boiling water and steep a chamomile tea bag in it for 10 minutes. Once the tea has cooled down, apply to individual strands or pour it over clean hair and leave overnight. Rinse afterwards.

7. Vitamin C

The acidity of vitamin C will decrease the melanin of your hair and lighten them to give a natural sunkissed look. Just crush 5 to 10 pills of vitamin C into a powder, depending on the length of your hair and add the powder to your shampoo. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for about 1 to 2 hours. Rinse gently and condition your hair to avoid dry-out.


8. Honey

Honey has natural brightening properties. It’s a great option for those who wish to lighten their strands while providing moisture to your hair. Mix 1/3 cup of honey with 1/4 cup of conditioner. Shampoo as usual and apply the mixture for about 8 hours. Cover your head with a shower cap.
