That last Nintendo Direct was INSANE! It was just great game after great game, with some awesome-looking independents thrown in there too. Based on that video (plus one little extra that didn’t quite make the cut) here’s a list of 5 upcoming Nintendo Switch games that I’m desperate to own.
I never had an Xbox360 or a PS3 so I missed out on the first generation of HD gaming, but the fact that Assassin’s Creed is one of the upcoming Nintendo Switch games means I can finally enjoy one of the best titles I never got a chance to play. Admittedly, it looks like Assassin’s Creed 3 hasn’t really endured the test of time, with gameplay looking sticky and graphics already looking slightly dated; in many ways, I’m actually a bit disappointed that this port hasn’t seen some work to catch it up to this era of gaming. But, aside from that, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has been globally massive and I’m excited to finally be taking part on a Nintendo console.
Metroid Prime is a great series of games, combining complex and enjoyable gameplay with a rich storyline. My nostalgia glands go bananas when I watch gameplay of the first one, especially as it’s now over 15 years old, but the other two were great games in their own right and a fourth in the series is a welcome edition. It’s really important to emphasise the ‘upcoming’ part when we say upcoming Nintendo Switch games, as we recently had a message from the creators to say that Metroid Prime 4 is being delayed. How long? God only knows. Not that it matters to me, though. Good things take time, and part of the delay is in moving back to working with Retro Studios so hopefully this one will be well worth the wait. If you never played the original 3 games, I’d recommend doing so; you can buy a trilogy edition on Wii and there’s even rumours the trilogy edition will be released on Switch, too.
Having made the seemingly wise decision to not buy a WiiU, I missed out on the opportunity to play the first Super Mario Maker. However, based on the raving comments of thousands of Nintendo fans on the internet, a second Mario Maker looks to be a real treat. The game encompasses all Mario fans as it allows you to build and shape your own maps and levels using any era of side-scroll Mario game, all the way from Super Mario Bros for SNES right up to the latest DS and WiiU designs. Many fans simply wanted a port of the original game for Switch, but Nintendo shocked the numbers and created a whole new offering that sent fans into meltdown and, as a first time user, I must admit I’m very excited too.
I hate horror as a genre.
I just never saw the appeal. I want to enjoy the games I play and the films I watch, not sit tensed up on the sofa hoping that the next scary thing to happen isn’t too bad. However, Nintendo has announced a port of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and frankly, it looks fantastic. The combination of horror with a psychological thriller is a fascinating blend, adding a confusing mental element that’s intriguing to say the least. This is the first time I’ve ever been captured by the prospect of a horror game, and I’ll definitely be buying it.
Oh my goodness, it’s actually happening.
Of all these upcoming Nintendo Switch games, this is the one I’m most excited about. I never played the original Link’s Awakening, despite my brother owning a copy and telling me it was well worth a playthrough, but I loved its two spiritual successors (Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Zelda: Oracle of Ages) and I bloody love the Zelda series, so this is a cause of great joy for me. Visually, it’s a little bit bizarre; the Link avatar has an odd facial expression and seems to be wearing the BotW tunic, but I’m sure we’ll get used to that, and the rest of the animation looks like a good reboot for this game. Buzzed.
