6 Unique Ways to Fill Your Dorm Walls

Your dorm room is going to be your home for the year, so you want to make it as homey as possible. Most dorms have a pretty strict policy of leaving no marks on the walls, but if you use White Tac and Command hooks, the possibilities are practically endless. There are heaps of easy and creative ways to decorate your dorm walls to reflect your personality, make it feel homey, and leave no marks behind.

Here are 6 unique ways to fill your dorm walls.

1. Photos with fairy lights

Fairy lights create a great atmosphere, and this is a great way to make your room feel cosy and remember the people you’re missing back home.

Add command hooks to your wall, then hang fairy lights on the hooks. Then clip on photos or mementos or pictures of cute animals or your favourite celebrities. This idea is super effective with Polaroids. You can choose whatever types or colour of fairy lights you like and whatever photos you like. Check out a video tutorial from Jo Foster to see how you can make it.

2. Paint swatches

Hardware stores and paint stores have heaps of free paint swatches in a whole range of colours. I admit I’m obsessed with ‘stealing’ a bunch of these paint swatches because I love the colours and the names. They’re a perfect way to add a bit of colour to your wall. Use White Tac, and it’ll come off with no marks. You could coat your whole wall (props to you if you can steal that many) in colours of the rainbow like on Glitter Graphics, or just a segment of your wall in one shade. Or you could stick the swatches onto canvases like on POPSUGAR, so it’s easier to take down and hang up again.

3. Garlands

Garlands are perfect when you have a little bit of wall space you want to fill, such as above your bed or desk. They most commonly come in the form of pom-poms, tassels, or flags, but they can be made up of practically anything.

You can buy garlands from Etsy, or you can make your own. If you want to make a tassel garland, check out the video by Tiffy Quake. Or if you want to make a pom-pom garland, check out the instructions on The Blue Elephants.

4. Flower wall

You’ve probably seen gorgeous flower walls at fashion events, weddings, or all over Pinterest. They’re super fancy. Great news, you can make your own with fake flowers to it lasts forever. Check out Sweet Teal for the tutorial. It’s a super sophisticated way of decorating your wall, and you can hang them with Command hooks.

5. Tapestries

Tapestries are a super easy way to fill up a blank wall space and add some personality to a room. They’re super easy to hang because they just need Command hooks. You should easily be able to find a tapestry that reflects your personality as there are heaps of different geometric patterns, florals, and other graphics to choose from.

Check out Society6 and Urban Outfitters for some tapestries.

If you can’t find a design you like, you can get one custom made over at Etsy.

6. Posters

Posters are probably the most popular way to cover a wall. You might have grown out of the posters you had on your bedroom wall when you were a teenager, but there’s a huge range of posters available, you’re sure to find a few to fit your new tastes. All Posters has cheap and quirky posters perfect for college students. These posters will definitely provide some great talking points with your roommate or visitors. Etsy also has some great poster selection with cool quotes. You could frame the posters in order to protect them and make them into a statement feature.
