Top 10 Twisted And Dark Series To Binge This Winter

If you’re a sucker for everything creepy and twisted like me, you may be looking for some new dark series to watch. The best way to overcome this is to simply binge a shit tonne of spooky series. These are my top 10 dark and twisted series recommendations.

1. Haunting Of Hill House

This semi-new dark series can be found on Netflix and I have to say it shocked me. I went in with little expectations however I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The storyline started off a little weak, but it definitely picked up, and there was a good about of jump factor. I wasn’t particularly scared but 100% creeped out!

2. Seraph Of The End

Japanese Anime has a bit of a reputation for having beautiful animation and storylines, contrasted with dark and unnerving scenes. Seraph Of The End though, is a pretty dark series throughout. Based in a gloomy mystical looking city and its underground, this vampire ridden show is definitely twisted. Despite this though, the story is incredibly thought out and kept me hooked.

3. Legion

Legion can be described as a dark series version of a kind of X-men. It’s action-packed and centered around a man that seems to be in a hospital for the mentally ill and struggling with his mental health. Without giving any spoilers, he meets a variety of different people who help him come to terms with himself and the world around him.  It’s definitely a must see, especially if you’re into the spooky and supernatural.

4. Stranger Things

Stranger Things is a super popular US series based in the ’80s. The thing I love about this show is the nostalgic ’80s references, alongside the fact its shot beautifully.  You almost forget there’s horrendous creatures coming from the upside down to completely fuck over these pre-teens. Despite this though, the element of teen drama is part of what makes this show so addictive, plus there’s a lot of ‘OH SHIT’ moments.

5. Narcos

Unlike the others, Narcos isn’t necessarily creepy and unnerving in the way as you might expect. However, this should not take anything away from this dark series. The series is full of passion, drama, and the general glamorization of cocaine cartels. But the thing that makes this series so unnerving is the real evidence and photos during the time of Pablo Escobar’s reign, and the more you realize that this stuff actually happened the more twisted it truly becomes. If anything though, it does show the beautiful country of Colombia and you get a real history lesson – between all of the shootings, blood and gore.

6. Dark Tourist

This docu-series is a new discovery for me, however, it’s given me a mixture of emotions. When dark shows get real is usually when I start feeling uncomfortable, but this show starts real and stays real so prepare to feel uneasy throughout. It’s basically about a New Zealander exploring all of the dark places globally that people are usually a little afraid to go to.

7. American Horror Story

If you want a long term bingeing commitment, this is 100% for you. This is eight seasons of pure twisted horror. If you’re worried about getting bored, don’t! It’s got plenty of versatility and it doesn’t matter what series you start at as they’re all completely unrelated. But just start from the beginning anyway!

8. Ash Vs The Evil Dead

This parody dark series of 1980’s movies The Evil Dead is only really vaguely scary. It’s definitely got some scare factor but it’s mainly a mixture of hilarity, weirdness and full blown gore. I recommend making sure you’re not eating when watching, especially anything tomato sauce based!

9. Dark

Dark has been described as the more adult, German Stranger Things. It definitely has a more eery and bleak feel, and there’s a lot of build up and anticipation. This dark series full of mystery and drama and although has a supernatural element, it’s more the intricacy and twists that keep you hooked.

10. Black Mirror

Black Mirror has to be my ultimate favorite dark series out of all ten of these. Each episode is completely different and basically like a movie all in itself, so don’t worry about your commitment issues. Plus you can watch them in any order. But don’t confuse this with an easy watch; it’s definitely something that will change the way you look at your toaster. It’s essentially, for the most part, based in futuristic distopias where machines are destroying us. In an age where we’re all completely infatuated with technology, it really highlights the possible yet extreme cases where our beloved finally turns on us. I mean, it’s all inevitable anyway, right?

Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean you have to cast away all of your spooky cravings. Tell us what your favourite dark series are in the comments below!
