Top Underrated Halloween Songs You Need On Your Playlist

September is ending, and that only means one thing… Halloween! Yep, that’s right it’s time to start visiting costume shops, brainstorming what you want to go as and most importantly RSVP’ing to all the Halloween parties you will be going to! And make sure there are bumpin’ Halloween songs!

Although the scary/ pop culture themed costumes and all the candy you can sinfully eat are a major part of the Halloween period- one must not forget about the music! They say that music is the soundtrack to our lives, which means we really should relish in ALL the seasonally themed songs when certain holidays come up in order to celebrate them in full form and make epic memories!

With that being said, there are many songs out there which are really old and thus forgotten about, and also some songs that have subtle Halloween related connotations to them. Consequently, this makes for a lot of really good but HIGHLY underrated Halloween jams!

Here are some great, UNDERRATED Halloween songs that you should definitely have on your playlists this year…

1. White Wedding, Billy Idol

This song is from the 80s, making it a little less well known in today’s day and age! Regardless, it is a classic and one of Billy Idol’s most successful songs. The title of this song seems like it is a beautiful love song which is fit to be played at any wedding, where in fact it is actually quite dark! In the song, Billy is singing about a woman/girl he loves marrying someone else while he still loves her. The video is quite eerie with Billy attending a gothic wedding, making the term “white wedding” highly ironic!

The gothic vibe is enhanced even further throughout the video when Idol forces a barbed wired ring onto the bride’s finger, consequently causing her knuckle to cut and bleed. The actress playing the bride actually insisted that her knuckle should really be cut in order for the scene to appear more realistic… talk about gruesome! This paired with the creepy dancing and the eerie sounds of both the background guitar and Billy’s deep/intense voice makes this the perfect underrated Halloween song that needs to be on your playlists! This is one of the best Halloween songs!

2. Take it off, Kesha

Although Kesha is a major star who has an impressive list of hits under her belt, her song “Take it off” is not as successful and well known as some of her others. This song gives us plenty of reasons to believe that it is for sure a major Halloween anthem that is TOO underrated! In the song, she talks about there “being a place downtown where all the freaks will come around”, as well as starting her song by stating something along the lines of an animal coming alive when it gets dark outside!

The low registered, auto toned sound of Kesha’s voice makes all the spooky lyrics sound more like an epic Halloween song that needs to be blasted out loud at midnight! The video also sees Kesha as well as others raving around a secluded place… a perfect place for a party right? This upbeat song will for sure help you to release your inner FREAK as Kesha says, making it the perfect addition to your Halloween playlist!

3. Hold Me Down, Halsey

This is a song full of anti-religious imagery in the form of demons and devils! Halsey sings about the devil trying to eponymously hold her down, whilst also narrating about selling her soul and all the demons trying to fight and pounce on her. She continues to repeat the fact that it is all these things that she, and I quote “lives for”. The eerie repetition of a single high note by a piano makes the whole song even more spooky and alarming. With this not being an actual single from Halsey’s album- Hope Foundation Kingdom, but just a featured track- it is not as circulated as other dark songs out there, making it something different to listen to as you reign in the Halloween period!

4. Dead To Me, Melanie Martinez

“Dead To Me” is a song featured on Melanie’s EP, Pity Party. It is about Meanie trying to remove her ex- boyfriend from her life. The pain he has put her through has made her crazy, consequently making her unable to forget him despite how much she tries to. As a result, the only way for her to fully forget him is to remove the idea of his existence out of her mind, figuratively ‘killing him’ by ending his role in her life.

This metaphor of her ex-boyfriend being ‘dead’ to her is brought to life by her singing about going to his funeral, dressing up in black at his wake, giving a rose to his mother and toasting a glass of champagne in his so called ‘memory’… sends a shudder through your spine am I right? The opening of the song is really creepy as it starts off with Melanie singing acoustically with a guitar in the background. Her raspy, angelic voice really adds to the eerie effect of the whole song, making it a must have for all your Halloween playlists!

5. Dead Hearts, Stars

This is definitely one of my favourite Halloween songs ever! It flows as a conversation between a man and a women, where the women is being consoled by the man after she has had a frightening encounter with ghosts. The female sings about how the ghosts seemed to her as visions of children she once knew, with “light” in their eyes. She also narrates about the feelings of death and sorrow that came over her. However, if you thought the concept of ghosts in this song is creepy then think again as the whole song seems to have a hidden meaning centring on the past.

In this case, the female sings about these so called childlike ghosts, stating that “It’s hard to know that you still care”, “Now they’re all dead hearts to you”. She is actually alluding to all the people she once knew but are now “dead” to her. The haunting underlying meaning to this song about the past being dead to us and people we once knew and loved now merely being “dead hearts” really makes this song underrated due to its actual deep philosophical meaning! Not only is it a song about a supernatural encounter- which SCREAMS Halloween, but it also teaches us a thing or two about life… a win win wouldn’t you say? Definitely add THIS hit to your Halloween playlist!
