Makeup is the easiest way to update your look from season to season. We all know the bronzed, glowy (well, glossy now) skin that comes around every summer, as well as the characteristic pop of colour somewhere on the face that appears on the catwalks come the SS shows. This year, we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to glitter (perfect for festival season) nor the glossy, almost sweaty skin (again, perfect for festival season), and we’re adding coloured shadow to our repertoire. Or a big graphic liner, or a pink blush. The main thing to take away from, here, is to pick one focal point for each look – be this the skin, smudged liner, or a bright blue eyeshadow (although this does pair particularly well with red lipstick – there are definitely exceptions to the rule.). Just remember to have fun with it! To find out more, here are our picks for the summer makeup trends 2018:
Glitter on the eyes/lips/face first came around a few seasons ago (Burberry AW16 if I’m not mistaken) and it’s not left. This season, we saw lots of smudgey, glittery smoky eyes – see Topshop and Ashish – as well as a more ethereal shimmer at the likes of Peter Pilotto. Wear a subtle sheen for the day, and layer it on for the summer evenings! Here’s how they did it at Topshop:

As with every summer, summer 2018 is no exception in terms of the red lips – Dolce & Gabbana did their classic red lips and winged liner again, and Helmut Lang had a very cool horizontal ombré lip going. Chanel paired theirs with a very cool smokey blue eye (red and blue look fantastic together, by the way).

Natural skin is great for those blessed with already perfect skin, but the emphasis on actual skincare this seasons means that we may be able to actually achieve the skin in time for summer. Seen at the likes of Alexander Wang, Lacoste, and Saint Laurent, pair a bare face with a bit of concealer where needed and brushed-through brows.
Glossy lids weren’t as big a runway trend as they are a street style trend, but it still looks cool. Try a creamy lipstick on the lids for a pop of colour, or stick with a lip-gloss or glossy balm for a more natural finish. This is one of the best summer makeup trends 2018 has seen yet!

Add a clear gloss to finish off a no-makeup look, or go for a holographic or glittery one for an eye-catching finish. Layering gloss over a bright lipstick is a fun (albeit messy) update on the statement lip, bit luckily shops are full of glossy lip stains.

So – never thought I would see this day come but – blue eyeshadow is back. In a really, really, big way. Chanel’s doing it (and it looks kind of cool? Even the powdery blue at House of Holland?). As is red, yellow, green, orange, pink, purple, you name it, it’s on our eyelids. See at the likes of Marni, Fendi, and Missoni, the nudes are being ditched for a pop of colour for summer 2018. Go for a monochrome matte on just the top lid, or add gloss for extra dimension.

Graphic liner was everywhere this season – Versus by Versace, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger… the list goes on. Go for a full-on Amy Winehouse-esque liner, or a subtler graphic cut-crease like Zoe Kraviz.

A bit of blush went a long way at so many shows as far as summer makeup trends 2018 is concerned. Dust over the lids, temples, cheeks, and lips (or match your lipstick with your blush) for a healthy flush of colour. A cream blush works well for this, too, as it’ll help you achieve that glowy skin! For a more dramatic look, copy this Valentino makeup:
