Pre-drinks. The event in which consumption of alcohol takes place prior to a party or night on the town. Also known as a piece of typical university student culture. Even though Coventry has a city status any of us students know the difficulty of finding a decent place to drink that isn’t just Wetherspoons. So, that you don’t have to go out and waste your time here is a list of tried top places for pre-drinks in Coventry!
You’ve definitely seen Ivy House as it’s located right next to the university buildings but you might often overlook it. A big mistake. The interior aesthetic is actually really nice and the drinks are super cheap. Always a big bonus.
But most importantly the best thing about Ivy House is the queue jump passes for Kasbah Nightclub available every Monday and Friday from 9 pm. Passes are limited and given out on a first-come, first-served basis (and it gets very busy) so arrive early to guarantee a pass.
The Botanist is quite new to Coventry but is already gaining a name for itself as the most aesthetically pleasing place in the city. With secret garden vibes, you can explore a variety of drinks, where the resident botanists create unique concoctions. If you’re ever in need of a new Instagram post The Botanist is definitely the place to go.
The restaurant is gorgeous and P.S the cocktails are to die for! It is relatively expensive so maybe not somewhere you would go often but for a special night out definitely.
Even though this was list was to find places other than Wetherspoons we can’t deny how great Spon Gate is. It’s the one Wetherspoons that has music, DJ and a dancefloor. It’s so much better than The Earl of Mercia and The Flying Standard. Like any Spoons we just absolutely love it.
The food is cheap, the drinks are cheap and we can never say no to 2 for £12 pitchers. Purple Rain or Blue Lagoon? It’s a hard choice. A top tip is to get a seat near the window so you can see when the line for JJs is getting long and be the first out there.
Teezers isn’t just a bar/restaurant but an indoors retro crazy golf course! Day or night you can go to Teezers and play a cheeky game of golf-themed around your favourite retro culture. From FRIENDS to Jurassic Park to Oasis it has everything nostalgic you could ever want.
The cocktails on sale are just as funky, served in red cups and covered in sweets. The crazy golf is hard to beat but I’m sure after a few drinks you won’t care. Play a quick game before getting your club on.
Down the cobbled streets around Bayley Lane and Cathedral is The Golden Cross Pub. The Golden Cross is the oldest pub in Coventry and one of the oldest in the whole of the Midlands. When you pre-drink here you’re not just getting drunk on delicious drinks but a look into the interesting history of the city. They have live music every Saturday from around 9pm, an open mic night every Tuesday between 8 pm and 11 pm and often show football games.
Described as “a friendly venue offering delicious food, great drinks, and unforgettable experiences” is completely spot on. Although we definitely have some drunk pre-drink drunk memories here we’d like to forget. The drinks are cheap and if you get peckish they have delicious food. And they often have football games showing and quizzes, so make sure to keep updated on what’s happening.
