Top Fashion Tips For A Petite Girl

Although being short is great, it can sometimes be tricky to create a good outfit with shorter proportions compared to normal sizes. While their are petite lines in some retail brands, their is nowhere near as much products in these lines compared to the mainstream clothing. As a petite girl who heavily invests in their outfits, I have found I struggle with looking swamped in a lot of things I try on, but over the years I have been able to figure out a few tips and tricks to make me feel more comfortable and look taller while looking killer.

1. Nude heels

By wearing a nude heel which blends with your skin tone, you’re not only getting the extra height from the heel but the colour will make an illusion of your legs being longer as well. You can wear a nude heel with any outfit or event, pair it with jeans for an everyday look or with a sparkly dress for a party. Nude heels should be a closet essential for every petite girl as they are so versatile and work wonders!

2. High waisted jeans

If you are under 5 foot 3 and own a pair of mid or low rise jeans, throw them out. (Well, don’t actually bin them, that’s not sustainable – donate them or sell them). Not only does the high waisted jean elongate you, but it also defines your waist, which is another important aspect of dressing a petite body. The best type of jean a short girl can buy are mum jeans – always high or super high waisted, cinches in around the waist and really fashionable, you can’t go wrong!

3. Belted dresses

Do you have a dress which you love but feel its an awkward length on you? Just grab a belt and voila! Problem sorted. By belting a loose fitting dress at the smallest part of your waist and then pulling some excess material up, you can get the dress to the right length for you. You can also style this two ways, firstly with the belt showing, and secondly by pulling up a bigger amount of material and covering the belt up with that material.

4. Slit dresses and skirts

As someone who absolutely loves maxi length dresses and skirts, I am usually left heartbroken as the amount of material completely swamps my body. There is a fail-safe though when it comes to petite girls and maxi length outfits, which is always go for something with a slit in it as it will show off your legs underneath; and if you are really in love with a dress that doesn’t have a slit, go to a seamstress and get them to put one in for you (or if your good with scissors and a sewing machine, do it yourself for free!).

5. Cropped jackets

While most jackets look okay on petite girl, the best jacket you can wear is one that is cropped to the waist, this is because it proportions your body to make your legs look longer. The best thing to pair with you cropped jacket would be something which comes in at the waist, so either high waisted jeans or a belted dress, this to further emphasise the waist as this is the starting point on the body to make your legs look longer and you look taller! (One extra tip when it comes to jackets: beware of big puffer jackets, as they will round you out because of your height).
