Tips On Styling Patterned Clothing Everyone Should Know

Looking to give your outfit that little bit of edge? Trying to style something that is sure to make stand out in a crowd? Patterned clothing is a great way to do just that! But with styling patterned clothing, comes nuances not everyone is aware of. If styled wrongly, what could’ve been a cute outfit will become something tacky and cheesy instead. To avoid that, here are some tips on styling patterned clothing everyone should know!

1. Less is more

Sometimes, going for more isn’t always the best idea. When styling your outfit, try not to go for too many patterns in one go. While two patterns may still look tasteful and endearing, any more will definitely be too much. Too much going on can look tacky and cheesy, which is not the look you want to be going for! Try not to patch too much of the same pattern together as well. To be safe, always settle for two patterns or less when styling your clothes. This will give your outfit some space to breathe, and will give you the right amount of edge you’re looking for as well!

2. Be mindful of colour

When trying to style patterned clothing, you have to make sure the colours don’t clash. Clashing colours will make you stand out, but the way you want it to. This is useful when trying to style more than one print together, too. Chances are that if your colours go well, so will the pattern! Examples of clashing colours include green and pink, gray and brown etc. Be sure to style complementary colours instead. Basic colours, like white and black, are always a safe bet to go for as well! They’ll match most colours you pull out of your closet, so you won’t have to worry about having a clashing outfit. Make sure the colours in your patterned outfit match well, and you’re sure to look amazing!

3. Size matters

If you’re looking to match two different patterns together, one thing to note is the size of the patterns! If you style an outfit with two predominant patterns, they’re bound to clash and your outfit will just end up looking out of place and cheesy. If your shirt has a large pattern, like stripes for example, settling for a pattern that is smaller for your skirt/pants would work better and vice versa. The smaller pattern allows your outfit to really shine, without being too distracting and overwhelming.

4. Basics can never go wrong

Going back to the basics is always a safe bet when styling a patterned outfit. Basics will give your outfit a breather, while also allowing the pattern to truly shine! If, for example, your shirt is checkered, then go for some basic jeans and vice versa. Solid coloured tops, and denim bottoms are great choices to consider when styling patterned clothing as they’re both fashionable and basic at the same time.

5. Distribute your patterns more evenly

When trying to style two or more patterns together, one thing to keep in mind is to distribute them well. Don’t get me wrong- if you want to style a patterned shirt with a printed jacket, go ahead! Just bear in mind that doing this might make your top look too busy, and as a result, cause your outfit to look out of place. In case this happens, be sure to distribute your patterns more evenly, by having one on the top and one at the bottom.
