8 Tips On How To Make Your Hair Grow Longer

Having longer hair has lots of advantages, such as being able to braid and style your hair more elaborately. With summer fast approaching, we’re dreaming of enviable beach-ready waves that flow long past our shoulders. Studies suggest the average person sees only 0.5 inches of hair growth per month, which can be off-putting if you want to transition your hair into a longer style fast. However, there are things you can do and avoid to promote healthy and happy hair growth. Here’s how to make your hair grow longer.

1. Get a regular trim

It’s very tempting to avoid the hairdressers at all costs when trying to grow out your hair, but this can actually be counter-productive to seeing fast and healthy growth. Split ends are your enemy, and they can easily split up your hair meaning the next time you go for a trim, you have to have a much larger chunk cut than you were expecting. Popping into the hairdressers for a regular trim will keep your locks healthy, meaning they will grow much faster. Not sure how to make your hair grow longer? Follow these tips!

2. Avoid bleaching and dying your hair

Everyone knows that bleaching is super damaging for your hair, and it can take a lot of oil masks and hydrating treatment to just make it look healthy again – which is not ideal when trying to promote hair growth. If you must dye your hair, consider using a more natural product such as henna hair dyes from Lush, which are less damaging to your hair.

3. Make sure you’re getting the right vitamin intake

Making sure you’re getting the right amount of certain vitamins in your diet can be essential for increasing your hair growth. These can all be taken from eating the right foods in your diet, or alternatively by taking vitamin supplements. The following vitamins are particularly important for hair:

Vitamin A: Promotes growth
B-vitamins: Carries oxygen and nutrients to your scalp to promote growth
Vitamin C: Produces collagen to keep hair strong

Another option is to take a vitamin blend which is specifically designed for promoting hair growth. Try these, by Hair Burst.

4. Use hair products and masks designed for improving growth

There are lots of hair products available which will specifically promote hair growth and encourage your locks to grow faster. Some of my favourites include Roots by Lush, which stimulates the scalp and hair follicles to promote thicker and healthier hair growth, and L’Oreal Dream Lengths hair mask, which helps repair damage and avoids breakage in long hair.

Peppermint oil and Argan oil are also highly recommended for hair growth, and there are many DIY recipes for hair masks if you fancy making your own rather than splashing out.

5. Shampoo less

Though it is important to use products that moisturise and strengthen your hair, it is equally as important to not use too much of the wrong kind of product. Shampoo is great for keeping your hair looking clean, but shampooing too often and excessively can strip the essential oils from your hair which will lead to it becoming dry and damaged.

When you do shampoo, consider using a product designed for hair growth, such as a caffeine or vitamin boosted product, so you know that your use of shampoo will still be beneficial for your hair.

6. Brush carefully

Brushing your hair roughly can very easily lead to breakage and damage, which will hinder your hair growth. When wet, brush from bottom to top rather than from top to bottom, as this will prevent knots gathering at the bottom of your hair and breaking away. Use a Tangle Teaser brush to go easier on your hair whilst ensuring it is knot-free.

7. Consider a new pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases have been linked to causing friction as your hair lies against them all night, which leads to knots and your hair breaking away. They can also pull moisture from your hair, which can lead to it being drier and more prone to damage when you’re styling it. Investing in a silk pillowcase may feel very luxurious, but maybe the answer to preventing hair breakage and keeping your hair long and luscious. Alternatively, you could consider a silk hair cap to wear for bed.

8. Put away the hair dryer and straighteners as much as possible

Heat can quickly and almost irreversibly damage your hair. Split ends and dry, straw-like hair is often the result of using too much heat on your hair, which leads to- you guessed it – hair breakage, which is exactly what you want to avoid if you are trying to grow your hair long! Reduce your use of heat products in your styling routine as much as possible to give your hair some relief and allow it to grow.
