Long distance relationships are the hardest to maintain. Issues such as trust, insecurities etc. are bound to come in to play and fuck everything right up. Many people might tell you that long distance relationships will never last, but in my opinion- they can. Here are 10 tips on how to maintain a long distance relationship to make sure your love will last!
A key element to make ANY relationship last is honesty. Be sure to be open about your insecurities and emotions, feelings of jealousy, anger, frustration and all that jazz. Clear communication is essential if you’re wanting to work things through and solve arguments, especially when you’re long distance- I mean, how can your SO change for the better if they don’t know what’s wrong?
If you know your SO is the easily jealous type or if they feel insecure when you’re constantly hanging around certain people, I’d suggest avoiding hanging around people you know they’ll get upset about, or at the very least always tell them about it beforehand. This will allow them to feel more secure about the relationship, because who knows what’s going through your head when you’re running around with people they don’t like? Sure, they trust YOU, but do they trust THEM? It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so always try to avoid arguments rather than cause them.
Sometimes, when you don’t talk or call your SO after a long time, it might start feeling like the relationship doesn’t even exist. And if you’re trying to maintain the relationship, that isn’t really a good sign. Texting or calling each other often will help you feel like they’re closer to you, as if they never really left your side. You never want to start feeling disconnected to your SO because that’ll eventually cause a wedge in your relatinoship, and cause the both of you to drift away from each other.
But! Don’t text them too much. If you’re constantly blowing up their phone every second of the day, it’s going to start feeling overbearing and this might cause tensions to rise in the relationship. They might start getting annoyed at you, and arguments and fights will pop up and soon enough things will start to slowly fall apart. Give each other space to breathe, and to hang out with their own friends and family. Don’t always make it about YOU, YOU, YOU.
Know what you want from this relationship. When you’re in a relationship, you’re bound to hit low points, especially if it’s long distance, and during these times you need all the motivation you can get in order to push through and make things work. Long term goals, such as marriage, or even short term goals like eventually moving in together, will help motivate you throughout your long distance relationship and will make you feel like it’ll all be worth it in the end.
Going on holiday with your SO is essential when you’re in a long distance relationship. It’s not like any other relationship where you’re looking at your SO every single moment of the day- you only get to see them once in a blue moon, so why not make it fun while doing so? The planning process may also serve to be a great bonding moment for the two of you, and you’ll have so much to talk about and look forward to!
Sometimes, long distance can make you feel less loved, even if it isn’t the case. Sending your SO a gift will tell them that you’re always thinking about them and that you still love them, despite the distance.
Nobody wants to be left in the dark. Always update your SO about the things in your life, whether big or small. Your SO will feel loved and cared for, because you’re telling them that you want to involve them in every part of your life, regardless of distance.
Don’t give up on the relationship. You need to look at the bright side- the distance won’t last forever. If you’re constantly pessimistic about your relationship and its longevity, everything you’re worried about will come true. You’ll start losing trust in your SO, and fights will start popping up more frequently than usual. Always try your best to stay optimistic about the relationship- it’ll work out, don’t worry!
Trust that things will work out. Trust that your SO won’t do anything to hurt you. Trust that they love you as much as you love them. Trust is such an important thing in any relationship, especially when its long distance. You might find it hard to fully trust your SO when you can never see them, but know that trusting is the first step to make any relationship work, period.
