Thoughts On The Coachella Lineup For 2019
The most anticipated music event of the year is almost here. Only a few days into the new year and the Coachella lineup has come down as a blessing from the skies to get us out of the cold misery called January. As it usually does, the lineup has managed to do it again. It divided the world into two camps, those who love it and those who hate it. Let’s break it down and see what the most prestigious lineup of music events Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has to offer.
Coachella Holds The Mirror
This year it is the 20th Coachella, and the people behind the festival keep exceeding everyone’s expectations. It is understandable that the lineup does not tickle everyone’s fancy. Thanks to Coachella’s reach, the festival can land acts that most music events cannot. Coachella’s lineup is the reflection of the best of the year. Headliners are the most buzz-worthy names of the year, and other acts are the ones to watch. Looking at this year’s lineup, you can also deduct what new music will 2019 bring — new projects from artists like Childish Gambino, Solange, Billie Eilish and many more.
Headliners: Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala,
Childish Gambino
Seeing Donald Glover’s stage name as Friday’s headliner was nothing of a surprise. The star quality Glover carries keeps on growing each year. However, 2019 was exceptionally thriving in the world of Donald Glover.
Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” is the biggest hit of his musical career. He was always an artist to watch with tracks like “Feels Like Summer”, “Redbone,” “3005”, he secured his place in the music scene. After “This Is America,” the world awaits Gambino’s album, the last album under his stage name.
Donald Glover’s skill set goes beyond just music. His role in the tv series “Community” and later on with “Atlanta” has put him on the map, but this year he went even further. Besides being nominated for Emmys for “Atlanta,” he scored a role in “Solo: A Star Wars Movie” and will pay Simba in the new “Lion King’ movie.
His star quality and talent is undeniable and rare, thus the spot on the Coachella lineup as Friday’s headliner.
Ariana Grande
With the release of “No Tears Left To Cry” in April last year already granted a performance at last year’s Coachella. This year Grande is coming back after owning 2018 and becoming one of the biggest names in music that breaks records with every release.
Following the tragic Manchester attacks, Grande has taken some time off but came stronger than ever. Last year in August, “Sweetener” came out with “God is a woman” and “breathin” and that would be enough to land Coachella. But Ariana being Ariana put out her record-breaking single “thank u next” that blew the critics away.
Naturally, six months after “Sweetener,” Ariana managed to record a whole new album “thank u next” that has taken No.1, 2, and 3 on the Billboard chart, the first artist to have taken all three spots after THe Beatles.
On top of all her awards and record-breaking, Ariana is the youngest artist to headline Coachella. The festival is right in the middle of her “Sweetener/thank u next” tour, having concerts the day before and after her Sunday show.
Honorable Mentions
Now that the headliners are covered, Coachella has the most exciting names of music ready for you.
Janelle Monáe is also an obvious choice with the release of her “Dirty Computer” album. Following her Grammy performance of “Make Me Feel,” that left many jaws dropped and will seduce many more ears at Friday’s show at Coachella.
Another Friday act is the British band the 1975. Their long-awaited album “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” brought smashing hits like “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME,” “Give Yourself A Try” and “Sincerity Is Scary.” Following the 1975’s success, Coachella had to deliver the British pop-rock sound to Coachella Valley.
Solange’s new release of “When I Get Home” will be one of the most talked about albums of 2019, so expect a breathtaking performance on Saturday. Kid Cusi’s collaboration on “Kids See Ghosts” will also brighten Saturday’s show. Bazzi’s “Mine” put him on the map and that automatically means Coachella had to have him.
Probably one of the most anticipated performances and breakthrough artists is the young Billie Eilish with a new album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” coming March 29th.
Coachella has done well for itself this year. It reflects what people enjoyed this year, and no one should be mad about it.
