We can thank the movie We’re the Millers for justifying our drunken decisions, one-night stands and any other badass, self-deprecating and ultimately atrocious behaviour. And that all comes down to the phrase “no ragrets!” Damn right Scotty P! So what are some of the things you’ll regret not doing at university? The main mantra to live by would just be get involved. With groups, the city, your course, and especially people.
There is something for every one. Your uni should host a fresher welcome fair every year displaying all the opportunities and societies available for you. Here’s a secret, you don’t have to be a fresher to go. Maybe your fresher self was perhaps too shy or too focused on the sesh to think about societies in your first year. Make sure you give something a try in your second, third, or even fourth. It’s honestly never too late.
If you’re living somewhere for a minimum of three years you should definitely get out and explore! Not only to break up that Netflix boredom binge but also finding opportunities unavailable in your hometown. If you went to uni in your hometown, there is always more to learn, and, show your mates who are new to the area.
Maybe it’s the first time in your life you’ve actually got some “me” time. Get to know yourself. What do you like? What kind of person do you want to be?
As important as it is to get to know yourself… don’t hide away in your room! Uni is such a rare situation where you are literally surrounding by thousands of people your own age. Something you’ll regret not doing at university is seizing advantage of this. Get to know them and let them get to know you too.
This is getting to know someone a little bit more. When else will you have the opportunity to do such a short stride of pride the next morning? Uni is a hub of sexual opportunity. Guilt and judgement free. But remember, consent is the only sex that makes sense!
Take the opportunity to chat to a specialist in your field. You don’t have to be best mates, but maybe they could be someone who helps to relieve some coursework stress with reassurance. If not, hopefully they will just have something interesting to say once in a while.
Never again will you have access to this much material. Browse baby browse!
Something you will regret not doing at university is learning something, honestly. Hopefully you ended up picking a course you like. As fun as many other aspects of uni are, you are there to get a degree. Go to lectures and try out some of the free talks. Why not, you’re paying £9,000 a year for them. Not to to sit playing FIFA.
Whether this is a hall formal, a end of year ball, a club night or local festival give it a try. Uni can be stressful, fun is an important part of the process. Plus its a great way to make friends. You’re also at an age where you can still get up for that 9am after getting to bed at 5am. Make the most of it.
I mean it has to be done. Bad landlords, rats, and cold showers are essential to the character building process. Plus it makes you appreciate your home life so much.
What even is an iron? Not part of the uni vocabulary. Your freedom at uni expands to your wardrobe too. Be BOLD. And if that means wearing trackies every day that’s your choice and freedom to so too. But try things out and develop your own style, your parents WILL mock you. That’s all part of the process.
Basically any excuse to keep living the uni lifestyle, for as long as possible.
One thing you will regret doing is buying all the books on the syllabus… that you inevitably won’t read. Ultimately, university should be a time of your life that lets you be you, as many versions of you as you want. It is an era in your life of immense freedom, where you can be selfish towards your own needs. (but remember to ring home and tell your loved ones you love them at least a few times.) You get to live independently so absolutely seize every opportunity that comes your way. Something you will regret not doing at university is grasping all this opportunity in front of you with both hands. Seek out opportunity too. There really is something for every one.
