If you’ve never been clubbing before, it’s likely that you’re very excited for your first night on the town. Your friends have probably all been hyping it up already, saying how you’re all going to get smashed together and how much fun it’s going to be. In reality, yes, it is fun, and a great way of letting your hair down. But, (and I’m sorry for the but, I hate being that person that puts a downer on things) there are some things you need to know before you go clubbing for the first time. Here are just a few…
No matter how hard you try, you’re not going to get into a club without your ID. If you leave it behind, you’re just going to end up feeling extremely disappointed when all your friends are allowed in and you’re left to miss out on the night and, even worse, get a taxi home by yourself. Bouncers can be very strict, so no matter how much sweet talking you do, this is something that they’re just not going to budge on. If you don’t have a form of ID (you can use a passport or a driver’s licence), then try at your own risk.
You might want to do some research or ask around before getting ready for clubbing – some places are quite strict and won’t let you in if you wear, for example, an old pair of trainers. I’m not saying get out your maxi dresses and wear them with your fanciest pair of heels, but do just be aware that there might be some clothing restrictions. Your best bet might be to slip on a skirt and nice top, and if you can hack heels then wear them – if you can’t, opt for a nice pair of flats or wedges instead.
This is an absolute must. There’s nothing worse than standing in a club by yourself having lost all of your friends, and it has (rarely, but still) left some people in vulnerable, dangerous positions in the past. To avoid this, make sure you go out with a group of friends that you trust, preferably a mixture of boys and girls, so that you know if anything was to kick off that you would be in safe hands. It might be a good idea to plan where you’ll meet if one of you was to get separated from the rest of the group. It may sound like a ridiculous precaution, but trust me when I say it’s much better to be safe than sorry.
While drugs are forbidden in clubs, it hasn’t got to the stage yet where there are sniffer dogs waiting at the entrance. Depending on the location and size of the club, there may be scanners or bag checks in operation, but often people are just allowed to walk in exactly as they are. This means you really need to keep a careful eye on your drink – you don’t want anyone slipping something in it which is going to leave you vulnerable and feeling very ill. The best thing you can do is watch the bartender make your drink before holding it for the rest of the night – if you lose it, don’t try and find it, just buy another one.
Another thing which bouncers unfortunately can’t prevent is people stealing. It’s not rare for money or phones to go missing, and you really don’t want to be a thief’s next victim, so make sure your belongings are kept out of sight (zipped up securely in a bag if possible). You can keep things in your pockets, sure, but if you have too much to drink you could be done for – it’s more likely that you won’t notice if someone tries to swipe something from you.
