I still remember to this date the first time I ever watched Sex and the City. It was in the early hours of a Saturday morning and my twelve year old self had snuck downstairs to pop in my sisters disc of the series. From that early morning on I was both engulfed and fascinated with the TV show; immediately transcended into 90’s New York, where you could smoke in restaurants and sleep with pretty much anyone.
The show itself was raunchy, funny, fabulous and more importantly, honest. Not only did this show make me want to move to New York and become a writer; smoking cigarettes in the day and drinking cosmopolitans at night, but each of the four girls taught me some valuable life lessons.
The legend that is Samantha Jones once said, “I will not be judged by you or society. I will wear whatever, and blow whomever I want as long as I can breathe and kneel.” If you’re happy, then ignore what other people are saying, live your life!
Throughout the six seasons the Sex And The City girls most certainly did not have an easy-peasy dating life. Let’s not forget Brad who was very into face-licking, Thor who demanded Samantha to shave her lady garden and Arthur who was quite frankly an arsehole. If anything the girls taught us its that dating can be a battlefield filled with strange fetishises and unpleasant personalities.
PR Guru Samantha Jones waited literally hours for a waiter to finish his shift so she could take him home. She kept ordering more and more food even paying another woman to leave so she could have the waiter to herself. Fair enough, this is a tad extreme but when it comes to love (or in Samanthas case, sex) you have to do whatever it takes.
Although it may be a long and tiring struggle, finding the one you know you want to spend the rest of your life with is actually doable. Despite all the ups and downs (and trust me when I say there’s plenty) Sex And The City couples Harry and Charlotte, Miranda and Steve and even Carrie and Big still managed to make their relationships work.
Charlotte changed religion for Harry while Carrie and Big overcame cheating, commitment issues and long distance. If the love is real then it will definitely find a way to work itself out.
Throughout the six seasons and 94 episodes, the relationships in this show go back and forth so many times. Although some characters *cough* Carrie *cough* don’t particularly help themselves, some are a true testament.
Carrie and Aidan’s (messy) relationship proved just how imperfect Carrie actually is. He was everything she thought she wanted in a man yet she cheated on him with an ex who was everything she DIDN’T want in a man! While it’s easier to shift the blame and get incredibly angry at somebody else, remember we all have bad habits and flaws. Although Carrie shouting at Aidan after he bought her a new laptop because hers broke, I still can’t quite understand but I suppose that’s Carrie for you.
What’s the best way to get over somebody? (Apart from getting under somebody) – a bit of retail therapy! In Carries case this was A LOT of retail therapy but we all need to treat ourselves and what better way than a gorgeous pair of Manolo Blahnik’s.
Infamous Mr. Big was a commitment-phobe who dragged Carrie and her emotions through six years of emotional turmoil. He cheated on her, left her for LA and even left her at the alter. Although Mr Big certainly wasn’t Mr Perfect, despite his flaws he taught us that if you love somebody you should let them know! Tell them how you feel because you might not get another chance.
If both Carrie and Big taught us anything it’s that relationships are a rollercoaster turmoil of emotions. However when all is said and done, you’ll end up where you’re supposed to.
