With the rise in temperatures across the world, being environmentally friendly has never been more important. There are so many things we can do to help the environment and make the world a safer and cleaner place to live in. Here are 10 ways to help the environment at university.
Cities and towns usually do a lot of markets where they sell local produce. A lot of chain supermarkets use up a lot of plastic so this is a great way to reduce plastic and help out local businesses. If these are too far away, buy products with as little packaging as possible and go to your nearest supermarket.
I’m sure you’ve heard that walking or taking public transportation helps the environment. If you’re far away and have a car with people who are going to similar destinations, share one car ride together. The less transport on the road, the less Greenhouse gases are produced. Plus, if you walk or cycle, it will improve your health.
Drinking our daily amounts of liquids are important but using plastic bottles and coffee cups from our coffee shop means another cup that cannot be recycled. Instead, use a thermal reusable cup. Some cafes even give you a discount when you use a reusable mug which also helps you save money too.
From everything to boiling water in the kettle to turning the tap off when you’re not using it can help save water. Instead of buying bottled water, use tap water and fill it with a reusable bottle. It’s the small things like these which can help save the amount of water used and help the environment.
Only buy when you absolutely need something, instead of going when you have the urge to shop. Be more mindful of what you spend and whether you’re need going to need it or not. If you really can’t resist the urge to shop, buy second hand and from charity shops. This can also help you save money too.
It’s a bad habit that we all do, but just turning everything off, from the lights to the oven when we’re done can reduce the amount of energy we use and the amount you spend on electricity bills.
If you have some old clothes and books that you don’t want but are in good condition, instead of throwing them away, donate them to you nearest charity shop. These donations can then be bought which will then lead to money going towards a good charity.
You don’t have to go completely vegetarian or vegan but cutting down on meat can have large implications. Many pieces of meat require a large amount of water to produce. By cutting down on meat, even for one day a week, you can cut back on the money spend and be healthier in the long run too!
From water bottles, to plastic bags, plastic is not biodegradable and cannot be used for recycling. Many plastic objects from bags to straws are being thrown away and polluting out environment. Reduce the amount of plastic you use. When buying drinks, don’t use stirrers or straws. Use material or reusable bags when doing the shopping. All these tiny things can help out the environment is such a large way.
Of course, this is one of the most renown ways to help the environment. Anytime you have finished with something, recycle it. This can help reduce pollution and keep the world a little bit tidier.
